The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose adaptation of Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker & the Mouse King was commissioned in 1891 by Lev Ivanov, the director of the Imperial Theatres. The piece has become perhaps the most popular ballet performed during the Christmas season. Here the version by Derek Deane features Chinese elements as well as magical stage sets and lighting, which are all tailor-made for Shanghai Grand Theatre.
This Nutcracker co-produced by Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai Ballet seeks to create a "sweet" and "fantasy-like" dreamscape and bring surprising tricks to the work whilst respecting its classical beauty. Derek Deane, a well-known choreographer, was not only invited to choreograph but also do the stage design for this performance. The exquisite staging in this version is rarely seen in most touring productions of the Nutcracker.
