The brand new two-act ballet production Le Fantôme de L'opéra presented by Shanghai Ballet is based on Gaston Leroux’s worldly renown novel. The production is also the first presentation in ballet vocabulary of this work. The story, which takes place in the late 1900s, is told from the perspective of the “Phantom”, whose affection for the Opera’s rising ballerina Christine finds a tragic ending.

Le Fantôme de L'opéra is choreographed by Mr. Derek Deane, Artist Director of Shanghai Ballet, who has been working with Shanghai Ballet for two decades. His choreography for Shanghai Ballet includes Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake (Grand Version), Hamlet, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Lady of the Camellias. The creative team includes Composer Carl Davis (BBC’s Pride and Prejudice, and Shanghai Ballet version The Lady of the Camellias), famous Set and Costume Designer Lez Brotherston, and Lighting Designer Howard Harrison (Mama Mia!). Shanghai Ballet’s elegant ballet style, combines with the intense English theatrics, mysterious stage art, and majestic score, will bring out an exhilarating theatrical impression.

Le Fantôme de L'opéra will debut from the 11th to 14th of May, 2023 at the Grand Theater of Shanghai International Dance Center.

Choreographer：Derek Deane

Derek Deane, the world-renowned British choreographer who choreographed this production, is an old friend who has worked with Shanghai Ballet for many years. He has created six classic and original ballets for Shanghai Ballet, including Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Hamlet, The Sleeping Beauty and The Lady of the Camellias.

In addition, the original ballet Le Fantôme de L'opéra has assembled a strong creative team, including Carl Davies, composer of the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, renowned choreographer and costume designer Razie Brazelston, and the musical Mamma Mia! lighting design Howard Harrison.
