MoCA Shanghai, in association with Peanuts, will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Snoopy in conjunction with the 7th Animamix Biennial. This is the first time Peanuts showcases a large-scale art exhibition with a Chinese art museum, and it is also the largest crossover collaboration it has attempted with Chinese artists.

Charles Schulz, the American cartoonist and the author of Peanuts, created Snoopy and his friends in 1950. These cartoon characters have accompanied generations of fans over the past 70 years, and gradually became one of the most influential gang of cartoon characters. In the upcoming Animamix Biennial Shanghai, apart from exhibiting the works featuring classic Peanuts characters, MoCA Shanghai also invites 20 artists and groups from China to create new works for the occasion. This crossover collaboration with Peanuts opens Snoopy’s new journey in China.

With the theme of “What a Wonderful Day!”, the exhibition aims to create a paradise where people can forget about time and troubles. Based on the principle of bringing viewers multi-sensory enjoyment, the curatorial team uses different mediums including paintings, sculptures, sound, videos and multimedia to create an immersive experience for the viewers. MoCA curatorial team creatively combines the eastern and western context by collaborating with Haitian Culture’s traditional lantern making techniques, one of the Chinese intangible cultural heritages, to create a series of installation works. In addition, MoCA and “UKAN” jointly design an AR project in which viewers embark on an artistic adventure just by using their mobile phone to scan the AR codes at seven different locations in the museum or People’s Park. Viewers can cross the boundary of space and take photos with Snoopy at this wonderful virtual world created by real displays.

After enjoying this visual feast, viewers can also retain the pleasure of the exhibition by purchasing exhibition souvenirs. Designed and produced by the apparel brand JNBY, a series of limited-edition products for this exhibition are available. More than 30 Snoopy-branded products are available including stationery, home furnishings and apparel. What’s more, do not miss the Snoopy-themed restaurant on the top floor of MoCA. Let’s have a wonderful date with Snoopy at MoCA this summer!

Highlights

“Love, Hope and Dream” is one of the eternal themes of Peanuts. With the theme, MoCA invites Chinese artists from diverse backgrounds and ages to create unique artworks for Peanuts exhibition.

The highlight in this exhibition is the contrast between Chinese culture and Snoopy’s story. Young artist Wen Na, who is specialized in traditional mythological painting, integrates Snoopy’s daydream into a magnificent large scroll. The artwork is filled with Chinese magical style. Similarly, Wu Jian’an, who excels at connecting the spirituality of the mysterious world through Chinese mythology, creates a light-and-shadow space titled “I’m the First Beagle landing on the Moon”. The work is seemingly naïve and childlike but contains philosophical refection; hence, Snoopy also ventures into a Chinese painting. Chinese meticulous painting of Gao Qian instills a unique tranquility and beauty of Chinese culture into Snoopy. Time seems to stop in this dreamlike picture, calling viewers to watch and contemplate.

The lapse of time and the continuity of memory represent another important feeling presented by 20 artists born in 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The image of Snoopy is a mark of the childhood memory for each generation. Artists outline memories of Snoopy through various mediums such as paintings, videos and sculptures. The representative of artists born in the 60s, Liu Jianhua, showcases his iconic ceramic bone sculpture. Contemporary Asian artist Michael Lau, the master of vinyl toys art, creates a painting called “October 4th in 1950” from “first sight” series to represent artists who were born in the 70s in this exhibition. The artwork depicts the imaginary wonderful encounter that Mr. Schulz had on that day when he published Peanuts for the first time in 1950. The invited artist, Bonnie Chen, is a model, actress and director born in the 80s. She is known for her fashion, film and television works, but very few people know that she is a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a psychology major. Her video work is showcased in Lucy’s Psychiatric consultation booth in Peanuts. The artists born in the 90s and the 00s create a large scaled Snoopy-themed city for adventures with tremendous visual impact on the second floor of the Museum.
