With the main focus on showcasing talented young choreographers and dancers from Taiwan, Cloud Gate 2 was formed in 1999 by Lin Hwai-min. In 2014, choreographer Cheng Tsung-lung succeeding Lo Man-fei, its founding director, was appointed as the artistic director.

 

Cloud Gate 2 does not prepare dancers for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan; it has its own independent artistic identity. Its annual season, Spring Riot, presenting innovative works, is a must-see for dance lovers in Taiwan. Cloud Gate 2 also reaches out to tens of thousands of people by holding free outdoor performances as well as residency programs on campuses and in grass-roots communities in Taiwan.

 

Cloud Gate 2 has been acclaimed in venues and festivals worldwide, including Fall for Dance Festival and the Joyce Theater in New York; Sadler's Wells in London; Internationale Tanzmesse NRW in Düsseldorf; Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay in Singapore; and major cities in China.

Cheng Tsung-Lung’s family owns a slipper factory. Hawking slippers on the sidewalks was part of his childhood and adolescent life. The dynamics of street life and pedestrians’ behavior later became the source of inspiration for his choreography.

 

After graduating from the Dance Department of Taipei National University of the Arts in 2002, CHENG performed internationally with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. He was the resident choreographer for Cloud Gate 2 from 2006 to 2010 and has served as its artistic director since 2014.

 

Honored as “Artist of 2011” by the Performing Arts Reviews, Taiwan, and awarded the Performing Arts Fellowship by the Asian Cultural Council, New York, in 2012, Cheng also won the top prizes in No Ballet International Choreography Competition, Germany; the Premio Roma Danza International Choreography Competition, Italy; the MASDANZA Choreography Competition, Spain; and the Taishin Arts Award, Taiwan.

 

CHENG had choreographed and restaged works for Transitions Dance Company at the Laban Centre, London; Expressions Dance Company, Brisbane; the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; and Focus Dance Company, Taiwan. In 2017, he created Full Moon for Sydney Dance Company.
