“Concert on the Green” is a feast of classical music in nature. It will be a weekend permeated with an atmosphere of “love in music, love in nature,” allowing the concertgoers to slow down and truly enjoy a time of fresh air and share an intimate connection through music. This year the festival will maintain its previous format, featuring four concerts of various sizes both daytime and evening, at two locations – the Big Stage and the Small Stage – in 2 successive days.

On the second day, this special day of “520” (“I Love You” in Chinese), the Big Stage will feature the concert “Love’s Greeting.” The Shanghai Philharmonic, under the baton of Chen Xieyang, one of China’s most well-known conductors, along with soprano Xu Lei and violinist Nancy Zhou, will perform several pieces written and sung out of love. E. Elgar’s Salut d’Amour (Love’s Greeting) illustrates flowing lines, smooth melody and gentle affection; G. Puccini’s exquisite O mio babbino caro (Oh my dear daddy) expresses love with bitter sadness; P. I. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture depicts the heartbreaking beauty of romantic love; while F. Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is a reminder of everyone’s hope for the everlasting love.

Groove Papa
 
This year the Small Stage will be graced by Groove Papa, a Shanghai percussion band known for its lively and rhythmical style. With its roots in Africa, samba is one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions. Groove Papa is sure to create a rhythmical fanfare of Carnival with its myriad modern percussion techniques.
 
 
“Music Planet” Interactive Bonding Zone

A new program launched this year at the Bonding Zone will definitely catch children’s attention. “Music Planet – Children’s Music Creative Lab Station” is designed to break the traditional music educational format, stimulate children’s creativity and imagination in music, and help them learn music with joy and satisfaction.

Soprano: Xu Lei
Soprano XU Lei is now earning equal attention both from western and eastern opera worlds. She has been hailed by Music Weekly and Xinmin Evening News (China) as "A rising star all have to watch".
 
 
Violin: Nancy Zhou
Nancy Zhou is an American violinist. She was the first prize winner of the 2018 International Music Competition Harbin, the 2009 Johansen International Competition and of the 2009 China International Violin Competition, the second prize winner of the 2017 Isang Yun Competition, a semi-finalist in the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, a finalist and recipient of the Rastor special award for the best performance of Kaija Saariaho's Tocar at the 2010 Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki, Finland, a Laureate of the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Competition, a semifinalist and winner of the top prize for Best Performance of Paganini Caprices at the 2014 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, a semifinalist at the 2015 Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition, and a finalist at the 2015 Sibelius International Violin Competition.
 
Zhou has performed as a soloist with the China National Symphony Orchestra, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Belgium, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Tongyeong Festival Orchestra, Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Oulu Symphony, Central Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, and several other orchestras, and has performed recitals in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Austria,China, Taiwan, Russia, Finland, and Belgium.
 

Conductor: Chen Xieyang
Renowned conductor Chen Xieyang graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SCOM) and was appointed resident conductor of the Shanghai Ballet Orchestra immediately after that. In 1982, his concert with the Aspen Festival Orchestra in the USA was hailed as a success. He was appointed President of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 1984 and its Music Director in 1986, the first position of its kind in China. Since 1985, Chen has performed in many countries and regions, including the former USSR, Japan, Italy, the USA, the UK, Switzerland, Korea, North Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Austria, France, Spain, Russia, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
 
 
Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra
The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is a highly professional symphony orchestra developed from the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. The former ofShanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra is Shanghai Film Orchestra which was established in 1956 and Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra which was established in 1950, which had both made great contributions to the development of Chinese film and broadcasting industry.

In 1996, Shanghai Film Orchestra and Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra consolidated to form Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (SBSO) and it made great progress and development leading by the former Music Director Yongyan Hu.The name of the orchestra was officially changed to the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in April of 2004 with famous conductor Zuohuang Chen as its Artistic Director, adopting the world’s most prevalent system of music seasons. In January of 2008, youthful conductor Liang Zhang has assumed the position of conductor of the orchestra.In March of 2009, the famous conductor Muhai Tang has taken over as Artistic Director of the orchestra. Since January of 2018, famous conductor Yi Zhang will become the Artistic director of Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. With several years’ efforts, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra has now become one of the very best orchestras in China.
