Zhou Zhengzhong and Xu Hong Perform Schwanengesang
Baritone: Zhou Zhengzhong
Piano: Xu Hong
Schubert’s Impromptus are a series of pieces for solo piano composed in 1827. The two are now catalogued as D.899 and D.935 respectively. They are considered to be among the most important examples and cornerstone of this popular 19th century genre.
Schwanengesang (Swan Song) is a collection of 14 songs at the end of Schubert’s life and published posthumously. Same as what he did with his Impromptus, Shubert redefined the form of German Lieder and bridged the worlds of Classical and Romantic music, noted for the melody and harmony in his songs. The combination of Shubert’s final compositions in this concert is a homage to composer’s legacy.
Both Zhou & Xu are renown Chinese young musicians and frequently perform on international stages: Zhou Zhengzhong is the winner of many top tier vocal competitions including Marmande and Toulouse Vocal Competition top prizes. He has been enrolled in the BBC Young Artists program, and contracted Deutsche Opera Berlin as regular singer. Xu Hong is an active soloist and having collaborated with prestigious orchestras including London Philharmonic, Halle Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic etc. He had hold concerts in venues like the Wigmore Hall, Southbank Centre, Barbican Centre, Carnegie Hall and NCPA, and is now one of the most active pianists from China.
