Running from 26 June – 15 September 2021, the exhibition examines the evolution of Zaha Hadid Architects’ buildings over the last 40 years—from the flowing urban spaces of the MAXXI Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome (2010) and Leeza SOHO in Beijing (2019) to the studio’s ground-breaking projects currently in development across six continents—demonstrating a consistent desire to innovate and inspire.

The birthplace of Zaha Hadid was Iraq, carved by the Euphrates and the Tigris, which gave her a unique perception of time-honoured history. Later Zaha travelled around China where its natural landscapes and urban settlements have been also shaped through history by its great rivers and waterways, and she created many amazing works here. The first work of Zaha that made her famous was a competition-winning design for the Peak Club in Hong Kong (1982-1983). Based on the topography, this design seamlessly blends into the surrounding environment and responds to nature. Its organic architectural language creates an unparalleled spatial experience. Same as her later first built project - Guangzhou Opera House (2010) and a recent masterpiece - Beijing Daxing International Airport (2019). With other series of themed displays, they will illustrate works of ZHA.

This exhibition will span over two floors of MAM Shanghai. More than 200 great exhibits will be shown, some of which were exhibited in other top artistic organizations overseas, and some of which will be the first time showing up in mainland China. They range from models, renderings, photography and audio-visual materials of works designed by Zaha herself and ZHA, both built and unbuilt. More than that, the exhibition will provide insight into Zaha's design philosophy and aesthetic by detailing technological innovations and how they have changed the way the studio conceived, designed and created its built environment.

These works, which received acclaim and recognition from citizens, professional institutions and academic institutions around the world, showcases ZHA's pioneering research to improve the way industry is designed and constructed, covering sustainable development, information-based computing and design, social research and development, analytics and insights, and virtual reality. This first exhibition on the mainland China will also have a corresponding VR experience space, leading the audience into the future and frontier together with Zaha's concept.

Today, ZHA's projects have spread to more than 40 countries on six continents, and more than 400 senior designers from different backgrounds are working under ZHA's staff. What has not changed is Zaha's insistence on innovation and inspiration.

In addition, the exhibition will present works from Zaha Hadid's eponymous design brand ZHD, which are also inspired by Zaha's creative approach and iconic design philosophy, breaking the boundaries of the industry and highlighting her vision: striving for excellence and breaking the rules.

“It is gratifying to us as sponsors of the prize to see our very independent jury honor a woman for the first time. Although her body of work is relatively small, she has achieved great acclaim and her energy and ideas show even greater promise for the future.”

- Thomas Pritzker,
Chairman and CEO of the Pritzker Organization

“Without ever building, Zaha Hadid would have radically expanded architecture’s repertoire of spatial articulation. Now that the implementation in complex buildings is happening, the power of her innovation is fully revealed.”

- Rolf Fehlbaum,
Chairman of the board of Vitra Corporation and a jury member of the 2004 Pritzker Architecture Prize

·“Zaha Hadid is a formidable and globally-influential force in architecture. Highly experimental, rigorous and exacting, her work from buildings to furniture, footwear and cars, is quite rightly revered and desired by brands and people all around the world.”

Jane Duncan, RIBA President and chair of the selection committee

·"As a practicing architect she has been unswerving in her commitment to modernism. Always inventive, she's moved away from existing typology, from high tech, and has shifted the geometry of building."

-Lord Jacob Rothschild, Pritzker Jury Chairman.
