An interpretation of physics through movements of the body where a world of disorder shall find its order
ENTROPY is a brand-new work choreographed by Yin Fang and performed by Xie Xin Dance Theater. "Entropy" is a scientific concept which refers to the measure of the disorder undergone by a system. Things in our lives develop in a way much identical to the principle of the increase of entropy, meaning that the original order within a system never lasts long. In order to fight against the increase of entropy, people constantly establish rules in various scenarios, so that a system can operate in relative order.
By borrowing the concept of entropy, the work regards the body of a dancer as the physical existence of a system and builds order for it, simulating the dynamic process of the decrease and increase of entropy. Through the dancer's movements, we will see the establishment and changes of the order made by man in various scenes, and also take a close look at the relationship between a person’s behaviours and will in the frame of the human body.
Highlights
The switch between the identities of an actor and a choreographer
Yin Fang returns to the theatre with a brand-new piece
He is Zhong Hua in “Blue Sky Bone”. He is the policeman Zheng Yi in “Better Days”. He is Li Shaoqun in “Coffee or Tea?”. Many people have known Yin Fang through film and TV. But a dancer? Yes, he is also a dancer on the stage. Under the dual identities, Yin Fang has never given up his exploration in dance. His desire in creation has never stopped.
The creation of ENTROPY is a journey into the unknown. It started with a creative idea and that was all there was. There was never a clear picture of how this idea shall take form, but slowly, Yin found order in his spinning mind of disorder.
The humanistic connotation within scientific concept
Our life is a fight against entropy
Entropy is a physical concept of thermodynamics, meaning the measure of the disorder undergone by a system. Despite its scientific features, entropy has a rich humanistic connotation because it sums up the basic laws of the development of the universe that everything spontaneously grow in disorder, and this tendency is presented by the increase of entropy. Houses that are not cleaned for a long time will become messy; buildings that are in disrepair will become increasingly dilapidated; lovers that stop caring will gradually go separate ways.
In "What Is Life", Schrodinger said, “People live to fight against the law of entropy. What an organism feeds upon is negative entropy.” We have to keep fighting to push back the increase of entropy. Our life needs negative entropy.
“The process of creating ENTROPY is very similar to the scientific concept of entropy.”
Choreographer Yin Fang told us that the whole process of choreography is a gradual progress going from disorder to order, a fight between negative entropy and increase of entropy. The work regards the body of a dancer as the physical existence of a system and simulates the establishment and change of order made by man in various scenes. On the other hand, it is also a game between a man and his body. Is the “body” controlling the “man” or the “man” controlling the “body”? The conflict and confrontation in this process coincide with the concept of entropy.
