The dance drama Thousand-Hand Guanyin was produced under the guidance of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Shanxi Province, hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Taiyuan Municipal Committee, produced by Taiyuan Radio and Television Station, and jointly created by Taiyuan Dance Troupe and Shanxi Poly Grand Theatre Management Co., Ltd.
Being Inspired by the director Zhang Jigang’s hometown of Shanxi—particularly the imagery of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin statues at the Jin’ge Temple on Mount Wutai and the Chongshan Temple in Taiyuan—the production drew profound creative inspiration for its iconic visual style. Created over seven years, the drama is based on folk legends of Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy). Through artistic sublimation, it tells a deeply allegorical tale: Long ago, a plague struck the Kingdom of Dai, and even the king fell ill. The kind-hearted Third Princess volunteered to seek a sacred lotus to save her father. Guided by a red dragonfly, she endured countless hardships and finally discovered the miraculous lotus. Confronted by the suffering masses in a sea of anguish, the Third Princess selflessly transformed the life-imbued sacred lotus into nourishing rain to shower upon the world, using her own body as a vessel to ferry humanity through hardship.
Through the legendary journey of the Third Princess seeking the lotus to save her father. This drama illuminates the inherent goodness and compassion within humanity. Conveying a universal message of boundless love:
"Thousand-Hand Guanyin is extraordinary—it is not you, nor me, nor him.
Thousand-Hand Guanyin is ordinary—it is you, and me, and him.
As long as there is light in your heart,
As long as there is love in your heart,
Extend your hands to spread warmth!"
