Conductor: Teodor Currentzis
Teodor Currentzis is the Founder and Artistic Director of the musicAeterna Orchestra and Choir. Since 2018, he has also been the Chief Conductor at the SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart. In 2022 he founded Utopia, an international festival orchestra, and became its Artistic Director.
 
Teodor was born in Greece, where he began studying music. In 1994 he entered St. Petersburg State Conservatory to study under the legendary professor Ilya Musin. In 2004, Teodor founded the musicAeterna Orchestra and Choir. Together with musicAeterna, he works on medieval sacred music, baroque opera and experimental pieces by modern avant-garde composers, including scores he has specifically commissioned.
 
Together with musicAeterna and SWR Orchestra, Teodor Currentzis regularly tours Europe and the world with performances in numerous prestigious venues. As a stage conductor and musical director, Teodor Currentzis has worked with the leading opera theatres in Russia and Europe, including Opéra de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opernhaus Zürich, Teatro Real, and the Bolshoi Theatre. He has also collaborated with the key figures in modern Western theatre: Robert Wilson, Romeo Castellucci, Peter Sellars, Dmitri Tcherniakov, Theodoros Terzopoulos and others. Teodor Currentzis is a frequent guest at the Salzburg Festival as well as at RUHRtriennale festival, Festivals in Lucerne and Aix-en-Provence.
 
Teodor is one of the founders of “Territory”, an International Festival-School of Contemporary Art established in 2006. Since 2012, he has been the Artistic Director of the Diaghilev Festival, which takes place in Perm, the hometown of the famous impresario Sergei Diaghilev.
 
Teodor Currentzis and musicAeterna are exclusive Sony Classical artists. His critically acclaimed recordings of works by MozartMahler, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rameau, and Stravinsky have received numerous international music awards: ECHO Klassik, Edison Klassiek, Japanese Record Academy Award, and BBC Music Magazine’s Opera Award. Teodor Currentzis has so far been awarded the “Golden Mask” (Russia’s prestigious theatre award) nine times in his career. Additionally, he has been the recipient of the Toepfer Foundation’s prestigious KAIROS Award. In 2018, the musicAeterna Choir became the laureate of the International Opera Awards.
 
 

Presenter: The musicAeterna Orchestra
The musicAeterna orchestra is one of the most in-demand ensembles. It was founded in 2004 by conductor Teodor Currentzis. The ensemble consists of musicians from 15 countries. Their repertoire encompasses famous old masterpieces, works from the 19th and 20th centuries, and experimental contemporary compositions.
 
Together with Teodor Currentzis, the musicAeterna orchestra regularly tours Europe and the world with performances in numerous prestigious venues including Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Philharmonic, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Munich Philharmonic, Philharmonie de Paris, Kölner Philharmonie, Auditorio Nacional, Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, and La Scala. In 2019, the ensemble’s touring geography was greatly expanded. In February, musicAeterna made their debut in Japan, in November, the orchestra performed in the USA for the first time. The New York Times later called that performance one of the key events of the year.
 
The musicAeterna orchestra is a frequent guest at international festivals, such as RUHRtriennale, Klara Festival, Aix-en-Provence festival, and Diaghilev festival. In 2017, musicAeterna became the first Russian ensemble to have the honor of opening the main programme of the world’s most prestigious music festival: the Salzburg festival. The musicians performed Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (directed by Peter Sellars) and Requiem. Since then, musicAeterna has been regularly featured at the festival.
