Golden Hits
Sixty-four years of global popularity

Even if you haven't heard of The Sound of Music, you've certainly heard of Do Re Mi, the enduring, marvellous magic that is drawing generations of people back to the show.

Born in 1959, The Sound of Music, one of the most popular Broadway musicals in the international market, is about to celebrate its 65th birthday in 2024. To date, it has played over 4,000 performances on Broadway in New York and in London's West End, setting a Guinness record for the most people watching a show in a week.

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy for Best Performance Album, The Sound of Music has created memories for generations of audiences around the world. The musical albums, films, TV specials and other artefacts derived from the musical version have swept the Tony, Grammy, Oscar and Emmy awards, achieving a grand slam of the "Four Greatest Awards in American Art".

In China, The Sound of Music has opened the door to music for countless people, and allowed many Chinese audiences to learn their first English songs.

In 2004, the original Broadway version of The Sound of Music made its debut in mainland China, with 35 performances in Shanghai, creating a box office miracle of 17 million. 2014-2015, the show visited Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities, and made its debut in Northwest China. Charming reappearance, hard to find a ticket.

After eight years, the original version of the classic once again flew to mainland China, a warm return.

"Climbing Over Mountains"
Transmitting the power of love and music

"Today, 80 years after Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborated, their work still inspires the new generation to 'climb over the mountains'!"

The Sound of Music is adapted from Maria von Trapp's book The Trapp Family Singers .

The story takes place in Salzburg, Austria in 1938. The young and vivacious Sister Maria Rennerl arrives at the home of the widowed retired Navy Captain von Trapp and becomes the governess of seven children. She teaches the children to sing, and her kind and playful teaching wins the children's hearts and eventually melts the heart of their serious, grieving father. After the two consummate their marriage, their quiet life is threatened by the Nazi occupation of Austria ......

In addition to classics such as Do Re Mi, The Lonely Shepherd, and Snowdrop, which are full of joy and laughter, The Sound of Music also explores serious themes, including standing up for one's beliefs and courageously pursuing one's dreams.

The popular music and beautiful and touching episodes have transcended time and space, and still convey the purest touch and power, inspiring the new generation to bravely climb over the mountains.

International Team
Injecting fresh vigour into the classics

"We are trying to strip it from the aura of the past and make it new, eager to inject fresh vigour into this classic."

Coming to mainland China for this tour, the original Broadway musical The Sound of Music is produced by Shanghai Media Group (SMG LIVE), produced by Broadway International, and nationally operated by Shanghai Musical Theatre Arts Centre (SMC), which guarantees first-class performance quality.

This round of tour will faithfully present the North American tour version of The Sound of Music, directed by three-time Tony Award-winning Best Director Jack O'Brien. While creating first-class stage quality and conveying emotional tension and artistic beauty, the show will also explore new connotations and present a richer, deeper and more powerful side of the play to the Chinese audience.

Director Jack O'Brien said: "The melodies of The Sound of Music have been ringing in our ears for decades, but it may be time to look at this masterpiece once again with a critical eye, to savour more closely the deeper, richer and more powerful side it presents than ever before, and no longer just 'your mother's best friend'. merely 'the musical your mother knew best'. The Sound of Music is regarded by us as one of the most glorious productions of our theatre careers, and now we're trying to strip it of its past aura and make it new! We are all eager to breathe fresh life into this classic! "
