Dance, drama, sci-fi and…online games?

When technology becomes so advanced that “she” can travel through time and space via the Internet, and when all the kisses and hugs can be replaced by click and double clicks, will real body and live experience still be necessary?

JIANG Fan, youth dancer and joint artist of SIDCT, is thinking over the question from a brand new aspect in the post-pandemic time and asking the world this question in the language of dance.

About Will The Snake Eat Up The Motherboard?

In a world where the epidemic is forcing human beings to spend most of their time living behind their front doors, the virtual cloud becomes their new playground. A girl named "天佑吾鸟" is a member of this virtual community. Compared with her weak body in the real world, she finds confidence in the virtual world and enjoys various role-playing and her perfect image as an assassin.

Through games, 天佑吾鸟 feels her consciousness is no longer constrained to her body. She found a place for her in the virtual world. She was lonely and insecure, but she has found her inner refuge in the cloud. Yet, when天佑吾鸟returns to the real world, the contradiction and discrepancy between her real body and her consciousness begin to torture her so badly that she is about to make an unprecedented choice. The windows in the room and the purring of her cat constantly remind her of the difference between her real identity and her virtual character. The dark side of天佑吾鸟 is persistently magnified by the virtual world. She throws herself into the world of games and keeps fighting with the NPC because she doesn’t know how to save herself from being dragged down by these dark feelings.

In a future dominated by the cloud, what will happen to our real body and life?

A few words from the choreographer:

If we think of games not just as recreation but as the extension of consciousness, will we see this world differently? With the support of technology and Internet, the virtual world in the games is filled with imagination. Meanwhile, it alludes to the human nature found in various people. In this virtual land, our inner selves are actors and actress in plays that are presented in the form of games. We operate games. At the same time, we are changed by games. I don't want to define game in a narrow sense but take it as an example to re-explore the questions of whether people's consciousness can transcend worlds, how deep fear and physical weakness are embodied through our bodies, and how to change the world.

Highlights:

Dance is her language for a good story.

The imaginative and inspiring choreographies of Refracted Shadow, Dining Table and Web Traffic have proven JIANG Fan to be a competent youth choreographer and dancer. In her works, you can find both dance and drama just as you can find both dance lovers as well as audience of drama come to her show. This time, in Will The Snake Eat Up The Motherboard?, she is going to become天佑吾鸟, a virtual character, and invite the audience to travel through the virtual world along with her.
