Let’s go… sea kayaking at Double Haven Country Park (3D2N)!

 

Find yourself on the far north eastern most tip of Hong Kong SAR, arguably one of the most remote and stunning regions of the country! Declared as part of UNESCO’s Global Geopark, this area untouched by roads and buildings truly makes a great contrast when compared to the megacity of Hong Kong. Come with us as we kayak through the ring of islands surrounding the central lagoon, discovering plenty of bays, coves, and beaches for us to find a beautiful campsite for the night!!

Departures on Wednesday (Nov 8).

 

Day 1

• Meet at Sai Kung early in the day, where we will depart the town by bus and reach our kayaks at Wong Shek Pier, in the western branch of Long Harbour
• We will meet our guides and pack our kayaks with personal gear
• We head for Hoi Ha, home to over 80 species of coral reef (1 hour away by kayak)
• We will spend a short time snorkeling here before having our first lunch on a fine sand beach surrounded by the rainforest
• Our afternoon paddle takes us across the Tolo Channel and out of the volcanic region of Hong Kong into more sedate, sedimentary geography
• After we cross the Tolo Channel and pass the easternmost headland, we enter the sheltered waters of Double Haven
• We will see flat islands, with broad beaches, mudflats, mangroves, and forested hillsides that reach down to the water's edge
• Our first night is spent camping in a sheltered bay
• A beach fire is a must have to celebrate the wilderness solitude

 

Day 2

• We leave our campsite intact and head out for a day of exploring
• We will paddle from island to island, passing by village remnants reminding us of recent and ancient Chinese history
• We make a short hike to visit the old, not quite deserted walled village of Lai Chi Wo to see how the Hakka people have lived in years gone by
• Then, we continue to glide by peacefully, stopping at deserted beaches to swim or snorkel on coral reefs
• Finally, we end the night relaxing at camp feeling how completely isolated we are from civilization

 

Day 3

• Leaving Double Haven, we head for Port Island at the mouth of the Tolo Channel
• Port Island gives us another chance to snorkel on the coral reefs while resting before our final push back down Long Harbour to our waiting transport
• Passing the last island camp of Section 1 (Grass Island) we enter the sheltered waters of Long Harbour and quietly paddle back to our original starting place

If the traveler decides to cancel, s/he can get a refund minus a cancellation fee of 100 HKD (approx 85 RMB) if cancellation is made 7+ days prior to departure, 50% if is less than 7 days prior to departure, and no refund if the cancellation is made 2 days prior to departure or less. Please note that if the traveler decides to reschedule a rescheduling fee will apply. The trip entails a degree of risk, even if all safety precautions are followed and our experienced guides are used. Therefore, participants need to be reasonably fit, willing to be challenged and to listen and follow instructions and to learn. These tours fill quite rapidly. The maximum number of kayaks per tour is 12. This means the trips can fill up overnight. To avoid disappointment, if you feel you would like to do a kayak trip, please make a booking ASAP.

 

 

What If I have a medical condition? Can I still participate?

If you have any pre-existing medical or other issues, you must disclose them and ensure that participation is appropriate. You should not participate if you are suffering from a heart condition, are pregnant or under medication or influence of alcohol/drugs or otherwise not ready for strenuous physical activity.

All Participants are required to complete the Medical declaration at the Kayaking site and recognize that the Company will relay on information thereby provided for any treatment and/or addressing of special needs.

 

What if the weather is bad? Will I get a refund?

Every tour is affected by the weather, especially wind and tides. Also, Hong Kong lies in the tropical typhoon zone, so several safety aspects need to be managed. We make trip-specific judgments, based on expected weather conditions and other circumstances, including group dynamic and ability for that day. If we think the trip is not safe, we will postpone or cancel it.

If we decide not to proceed with a tour due to weather conditions or safety considerations being an issue, please respect that decision, it is for your safety.

We will offer either a delayed start (weather permitting) or a rescheduling of your trip. Depending on the circumstances on the day, we will consider how best to appropriately manage such a situation.

Once a trip has set off there will not be refunds for delays or changes of route or curtailments due to weather conditions or safety considerations (including limited capabilities of participant(s)).

 

What is the minimum age for this trip?

Minimum age for an unaccompanied person is 16 years unless in a school or other youth group accompanied by 1 or more supervising adults.

For participants under 18 years old-- it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to make such decisions on behalf of their child or ward.

 

How much kayaking experience do I need for this trip?

The kayaker should have previous sea kayaking experience and be moderately fit, as this requires good paddling skills in open water conditions. During this journey, the kayaker will paddle 80km’s of ocean with approximately 50% in open ocean and 50% sheltered inland area.
