Plot Summary
Act I
Giselle, a beautiful, simple, dancing country girl, lives with her mother in a small mountain village. Hans, a forest watcher, is determined to woo Giselle, but Giselle does not like him. Count Albert disguises himself as a peasant and comes to visit the village.
Giselle falls in love with Albert. The Duke takes his daughter, Mademoiselle Batilde, and the nobles to the valley to hunt and passes by Giselle's house, where he is hospitably entertained by Giselle. To thank Giselle, Batilde gives her a precious necklace. To stop Giselle from falling in love with Albert, Hans retrieves Albert's sword and cloak from the house, proving that Albert was originally a nobleman, in an attempt to convince Giselle not to be deceived. Giselle announces to everyone that she has fallen in love with Albert, but Batilde shows her engagement ring, showing that she has already been engaged to Albert.
Unexpectedly devastated, Giselle throws away the necklace given to her by Batilde and leaves the world in anguish.
Act II
In the wooded cemetery, the moon is cold and windy. A group of thin-skinned female ghosts (Velice), abandoned in life by their ungrateful fiancées, are looking for revenge and have repeatedly surrounded young men who have entered the forest and forced them to dance until they die of exhaustion. At night, when Hans arrives at the cemetery, he is surrounded by the ghosts of Velice and punished to death.
The ghosts tried to kill him again, but he was saved by the kindness of Giselle. The clock struck dawn and Giselle and the ghosts died. Albert's heart is filled with sorrow, having lost the pure, steadfast love of a young girl.
