This exhibition, jointly organised by the World Expo Museum and the National Museum of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, will open to the public on 11 November. Running for nearly six months, it will continue until 5 May 2026.
This exhibition features 131 precious artefacts (sets) exclusively from the National Museum of Liverpool, UK. With over four million items in its collection, the museum's classical sculpture holdings rank second only to the British Museum. The pieces on display represent the very essence of its collection. Spanning diverse categories including sculpture, pottery, glassware, gemstones, and sarcophagus reliefs, all exhibits make their debut appearance in Shanghai.
As a large-scale exhibition dedicated to ancient Roman art – a rarity in Shanghai over recent years – this major display fills a gap in regional exhibitions of comparable scale on the ancient Roman theme. It continues the exploratory trajectory of previous exhibitions on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, establishing a comprehensive series of exhibitions on Western classical civilisation. Its rarity and high calibre make it a standout among similar exhibitions in Shanghai in recent years.
This exhibition is positioned as a “one-stop experience to touch the light of Western classical civilisation and art”. Through three thematic chapters – “Legends of the Gods”, “Glory of the Empire”, and “Feast of Life” – it presents a panoramic view of ancient Rome's complete trajectory from mythology to empire and into secular life. Each artefact carries weighty historical narratives. The exhibition serves not only as a concentrated display of cultural relics but also as a factual account of civilisational evolution.
The exhibition showcases the extraordinary creativity of ancient artists through the realistic techniques of Roman sculpture, the exquisite patterns of painted pottery, and the opulent craftsmanship of mosaic murals and gemstones, promising visitors a truly awe-inspiring visual experience.
