Event details

This inspiring field trip teaches in an enjoyable way about the impact of plastic in our environment, how it affects our and the life of future generations. You will understand the scope and scale of plastic pollution and give your children an early exposure to one of the most urgent environmental issues of the 21st century. And believe it or not, you will forge new friendships and become part of a community of purpose. We can turn this ship around, if we work together!

70% of all waste in our oceans is produced by only six countries with China being responsible for the lion share. More than 90% of all plastic waste which we have discarded into our water bodies since WWII has already sunk to the bottom of oceans and rivers, where it decomposes into ever smaller particles. Plastic is though forever and only breaks down mechanically into smaller units like stone or shell breaks down into sand. It never really changes its chemical composition. As such it enters the food chain and consequently our own bodies. The life cycle of plastic shows that how we treat the environment is a reflection of how we treat ourselves.

Dianshan Lake is Shanghai's largest freshwater reservoir and the sourceof Huangpu River, the mother river of Shanghai. It covers an area of 62 square kilometers (24 square miles) and is surrounded by a web of canals and smaller lakes which all form part of the Yangtze River Delta.

Cenbo Village is small rural community located a few kilometers south of Dianshan Lake in the middle of forest wetlands. Cenbo is part of Jinze Water Town, a municipality of Shanghai’s Qingpu district with more than 900 years of history and related architecture monuments. Its location – only 60km from Shanghai Ppl Sq makes it an ideal starting point for exploring nature on weekends or even for a single afternoon.

About Green Steps
At Green Steps we have made it our mission to connect children with nature and develop environmental knowledge. We believe that learning must be fun and as educators, we nurture the curiosity to explore the outdoors. We believe a change in our behavior towards the planet starts by understanding the process that maintains life on it. This change starts when we become aware and responsible for our intimate connection to nature. We teach hands-on natural sciences using the outdoors as a playground and laboratory.

At Green Steps we have further developed the Montessori Method and apply it on nature education. We have designed a triple focus curriculum, which builds simultaneously intrapersonal, interpersonal and ecological intelligence. Instead of forcing children to study indoors, we facilitate learning outdoors. Chinese proverb pins down our learning approach when applied to nature: Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; let me do it and I’ll understand.
