The international annual Riesling weeks has blessed us once again this year and the German Wine Princess, Mara Walz, will bring her to our bustling city of Shanghai on July 29th. We are commemorating her presence by hosting a wine dinner with our esteemed royal guest of honor. The wine dinner will be at the prestigious restaurant, Hakkasan, with worldwide locations in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Las Vegas and many more. The Shanghai location is in the “illustrious Bund 18 building” offering you captivating views of the Bund. Their Michelin-starred chef specialized in mouthwatering Cantonese cuisine with signature dishes curated for the most exquisite palates. The Wine Contor also encourages you to drink tastefully by preceding the wine dinner with a blind tasting with an opportunity to sample some of the delectable wines from our collection.

 

 

 

"Palates Uncorked" is our gourmand series bringing fresh flavours from Rheingau, Mosel & Pfalz. You may not be a wine afficianado but, you certainly will appreciate these highly acclaimed flavour profiles matching the fine dishes from Hakkasan. The head executive chef Tong Chee Hwee uses his skill to bring you tastes of modern and traditional China. During his tenure at the Hakkasan Hanway Place in London as head chef, Hakkasan gained its first Michelin Star. In 2005, he gained the award of "London Chef of the year" and is the only Chinese chef to hold this title.

You will have the opportunity to participate in a blind tasting followed by a wine dinner with the wine princess, her vast knowledge will be a delight to both sommeliers and aspiring wine connoisseurs alike. For more than 60 years, the German Wine Institute/Mainz and the German wine queen, flanked by two German wine princesses, have been a successful team. The first German Wine Queen was elected in 1949. Since then, the election process has been as follows: every autumn, the wine queens of each of Germany's 13 wine-growing regions compete for the national title before an 70-member jury of professionals from the wine industry, politics, and the press. The jury poses questions on complex issues related to wine; the candidates are challenged to respond competently, clearly, and concisely - and to do so with the confidence and charm expected of an ambassador for German wine.

 

 

The wine queens themselves view their position as ambassadors on behalf of German wine, as representatives of a wine culture that is rich in tradition, yet thoroughly contemporary. Their role is that of a communicator, who is able to provide the public with information about the world of wine - from the vine to the glass, as well as address issues, such as the criteria for wine quality or the pros and cons of wine pleasure, to name but a few.
