Commissioned by SIDCT, Orange Fight - # Grew Up There is a piece from the SIDCT Youth Incubator Platform, choreographed and performed by NUNU KONG, an independent artist, also a winner of art fund at home and abroad, an artist in residence approved by Swiss Arts Council. It has always been the art museum where you may find her. However, this time she is bringing her piece into the theater.
It is about the deconstruction of self.
It is about the true self.
It is about life.
She peels off her layers.
She chooses a thorny path.
She says that we are all clumsy beings hidden under masks of calmness.
Is it dance?
Or an experiment on body?
【Where it all begins…】
WU Yandan (aka: Nunu Kong) graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 2004. She was the student of Ms. Yang Meiqi, educator of Chinese Dance and founder of China's first contemporary dance troupe.
As a freelancer and independent artist, Nunu loves to explore the various ways and forms of expression. However, due to lack of fund and long production cycle of theater works, Nunu spent much her time in art museums and injected her deep passion for dance as well as the exploration of body movement in every simple piece of her works. For her, dance and stage have always been the start of everything.
Now, under the invitation from SIDCT, Nunu is returning to the theater and her beloved stage.
【About ORANGE FIGHT - # Grew Up There】
If there are enough “selves” to endure all those temptations, fears, disappointments and doubts in life, things may be less helpless when they struck us. With such concept in mind, the choreographer began her journey of creation.
Before confronting a series of tasks, she first set a threshold on stage to limit extreme ends of action. That way, she could make herself a shelter or a place to escape if things turn crazy, and perhaps it can also be a place of tolerance when she unfurls her skin and transforms into a bunch of rebellious, intense and sometimes awkward versions. That’s hard not to be a tough fight, but the varied versions ensured how to tit for tat after when they fall victim to each other, sometimes they even contradict each other and hold back laughter while mocking. Should she let instinct take control? Or should her minds become a bit cunning? In the montage of memory the stage reflects the inner absurdity of our everyday interaction, the performer demonstrates in a gamified rhythm, turning knotty troubles into opportunities.
