Christopher Rüping, born 1985 in Hanover, studied directing at the Hamburg Theatre Academy and the Zurich University of the Arts. His first directing works were in Hanover, Hamburg and Frankfurt. His productions are both tender and exuberant evenings in which the actors can freely encounter themselves and the audience and which have made him one of the most influential directors in German-language theatre. From 2016 to 2019 he was in-house director at the Münchner Kammerspiele, since then he has held the same position at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. To date, he has received four invitations to the Berliner Theatertreffen: in 2015 with his production Das Fest based on the film by Thomas Vinterberg and Mogens Rukov (Schauspiel Stuttgart), in 2018 with Bertolt Brecht's Trommeln in der Nacht, in 2019 with the ten-hour antiquities project Dionysos Stadt (both Münchner Kammerspiele) and in 2021 with Einfach das Ende der Welt based on Jean-Luc Lagarce (Schauspielhaus Zürich). The critics of Theater heute magazine awarded him for the Young Director of the Year in 2014 and 2015 and Director of the Year in 2019. In 2021, Christopher Rüping's production Einfach das Ende der Welt was voted Production of the Year by the magazine's critics. In 2022, his production Das neue Leben was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen.
