“Belarus is my homeland, the place where I was born. Belarusian nature scenery is well, lonely place covered with hills, many lakes and forests. Belarus is beautiful and I love Belarus”, – Gena does not know English, but he learned these lines at school. His profession is a plumber and his hobby is straw weaving.
“MY HOMELAND” is a play about homeland and its place. We are all its heroes and creators. We are all co-authors and co-creators.
My Homeland is an experimental play exploring the relationship between people and their homeland, and the search for identity. The protagonist, Gena, an ordinary plumber, unexpectedly travels to London thanks to his unusual hobby of straw weaving. This brief journey abroad becomes an inner revolution: in a foreign land, he feels a profound homesickness and realizes, “I love my homeland not for any particular reason, but simply because it is my own.”
Framed as a “cosmopolitan comedy,” the play transforms a personal experience into a universal reflection. Through narrative, dialogue, and stage projections, the audience are invited not only as observers but also as co-authors of the story.
Breaking away from a single-voiced narrative, seven actors share Gena’s lines, presenting both the subjective and objective dimensions of his life, making the character complex and multifaceted. On stage, satire and lyricism, grotesque and realism intertwine, while music, images, and live video projection create an intimate connection between the story and the audience.
My Homeland is not merely a personal journey of exploration and connection to one's roots, but a philosophical meditation on self, culture, and the world.
