Jack De Marseille
Just like it is pointless to think of electronic music as just a single thing you cannot limit Jack de Marseille to just a single sound. Even if the dance floor is still very much his natural habitat after 25 years of DJing. the man - voted best French DJ by numerous specialist magazines - is as adventurous as ever, mixing up different sounds, energies and rhythms during the cours of a night or even a single track.

It is said that experiences cannot be truly passed on, but the answer to that could be that it totally depends on who is passing it on. If today we still see a penchant for oldskool Chicago house, primal and primordial Detroit techno and even UK acid sounds in those people that got the bug during the early rave period it is no doubt thanks to messengers like Jack, who keep bringing you those sounds, from the raw originals to the newer stuff that has the same roots. Without any distinction between the old and the new.

This superb open spirit as a DJ, producer or label manager is even more important today than ever. Jack has begun to set up nights that claim to go "Back to Origins". Origins dating back to the mid 80ies and beyond, with DJs on the bill who are pioneers and legends who are still in the game. And at the same time Jack is bringing you "Jam the Box" where he invites the producers of today who may very well be on their way to becoming the oldskool heroes of the future.

In 1990 Jack really makes his way to the top at the turntables of a big bunch of mythical clubs and festivals who are hailed throughout the world and whose names have changed the electronic movement and culture for ever. An incomplete and random list: festivals like Astropolis, Sonar, Sziget, Time Warp, Nuits Sonores, Awakenings, Transmusicales and clubs like Le Rex, Ministry Of Sound, Berghain, Fuse, Rox, Fabric, Tresor, Weetamix, etc.

It is in 1997 that Jack becomes Jack de Marseille, after being introduced like that by Jean-Marie Cavada in a tv show called "Marché du Siècle" in which new musical cultures are presented and discussed, in which Jack featured alongside New York hero Junior Vasquez. In that very same year Jack is the main DJ to go on the first big tour of Daft Punk.

Jack could have been content to just collect gigs and visa, but that is not his style. His sharing nature and his pride and love for his native city are instrumental in him becoming a key component of the sound transformation of Marseille.

In the summer of 1992 in the old warehouses of Seita in Belle de Mai Jack organises "Atomix", a rave party that multiplies audiences raving to long hypnotic sets. Jack also plays in his hometown for Marsatac, la Fiesta des Suds en la Fête du Panier.

His dedication to Marseille continues with a radio show on Radio Grenouille as soon as the station hits the airwaves and is also illustrated when Jack wants to go on the other side of his record case and open his vinyl shop Wax Records in 1995. Jack pushes, promotes and communicates any number of addictive beats, from house to techno to ambient, dub and drum n bass and this till 2003.
It is also during these years that Jack ventures into producing his own music - releasing his first 12" Submerge on Ozone Records in 1997 - and finally starting his own label Wicked Music in 2001, where he signs like-minded artists like David Caretta, EDP and even the new wave outfit Trisomie 21. A label he is rekindling in 2015 with the goal to release re-edits, unreleased stuff, new music, etc, as illustrated by repressing and adding new remixes to his album Inner Visions, originally released in 2009.

A little bit of everything can be a flaw with a narrow view. But for open-minded people it is a bona fide asset. Jack is ready to try everything and after 25 years that attitude is not about to change.
In 1999 Jack starts collaborating with La Maison de la Mode à Marseille to curate the music on happenings, fashion shows and exhibitions dedicated to Paco Rabanne, JC de Castelbajac or JP Gaultier and this in an age when sound design is only starting to be mildly interesting for the DJ scene.

A liberal spirit when it comes to promoting the scene Jack is also very much a part of it: featuring on the soundtrack of the theatrical version of Trainspotting in 1997 and on the trucks of the Techno Parade set up by the other Jack (Lang) in 1998, playing on the Love Parade in Berlin in 1999 as well as on a party celebrating Chinese music in Kanton in 2002, being part of the Marcéleste for the 2600 years of Marseille and the official opening of MP2013 Cultural Capital in Dock des Suds and playing for the French cultural centers in Cape Town or Rio de Janeiro.

Years later in 2015 this same spirit has allowed Jack to once again set fire to various spots in Marseille with his "Back to Origins" and "Jam the Box" nights, featuring fellow free spirits Oxia, Kenny Larkin, David Caretta, Funk D Void, Kassem Mosse, Steve Rachmad, Phase, while at the same time taking the liberty to show his musical eclecticism in various music minded bars and restaurants.

"A well-chosen song at the right time will always be better that a non-inspired track staying in tempo to shock and move the dance floor": this is Jack conviction and the reason why he has stayed in the game instead of losing himself in a monotonous and endless tunnel.

Very much used to game-winning smashes and killer backhand volleys, our former tennis professional knows that technique alone is not enough, even in music. The way in which things are done, the act of surprising, modesty and of course personality are equally essential. These are qualities Jack shares with Laurent Garnier, whom Jack meets when playing at Rex in Paris, on the Transmusicales in Rennes or during a TV show dedicated to electronic music, together with Eric Morand of F Com fame and a pioneer in his own right.

This approach of being at the same time both purist and cross-over pushes Jack in his producer guise and in 2002 he releases his first album Free My Music on Wicked Music, distributed by Wagram. Followed 7 years later by his second album Inner Visions, an inner mental trip of which the sounds work just as well during the day. Along the way Jack remixes peers like Anthony Rother, Audio Bullys, Scsi-9 (Smooth Sunset in 2011), Neil Landstrumm (April Acid in 2014), etc. Flying the "Back to Origins" and "Jam the Box" colors in 2015, Jack is still wearing these proudly himself.
