A two-time Pitchfork Top 50 Albums honoree, she weaves Latin American folk traditions into modern, icy electronic soundscapes.

 

One of the most innovative and forward-thinking voices in contemporary experimental music, experimental electronic pioneer, sound artist, and film composer Lucrecia Dalt will make her first appearance in China this July with her new album A Danger to Ourselves.

 

In her live performances, shifting electronic textures, raw yet rhythmic percussion, and her fluid switching between Spanish and English vocals come together to form an intimate yet enigmatic sonic environment. Within this space, listeners are invited to drift between reality and illusion, fragility and desire, as sound continuously unfolds and transforms perception.

It is hard to believe that Lucrecia Dalt’s creative career spans more than two decades, and that it was only about seven or eight years ago that the wider world began to truly recognize her work.

 

Looking back across her sonic trajectory, her sound emerges like a continuously shifting material—modulated, refracted, and illuminated—forming gravitational fields within her ever-expanding sonic universe. Perhaps it is precisely her long-standing commitment to experimental electronic music that has allowed the Colombian artist to develop such clarity of artistic vision. Within this sustained process, she has gradually shaped a distinctive form of “pop sensibility,” most notably in her Pitchfork-rated 8.6 album ¡Ay! and in A Danger To Ourselves—works that retain experimental rigor while introducing an unmistakable sense of melodic and emotional immediacy.

Embracing the Latin American musical traditions that shaped her childhood, Lucrecia Dalt reanimates them within a 21st-century sonic landscape. Dalt has long carried a near-playful sense of rationality in her artistic voice. With a natural inclination toward philosophical reflection, she often allows concepts drawn from her training in geotechnical engineering to quietly seep into her work. Through opaque and highly experimental musical forms, she probes metaphysical phenomena and the nature of human consciousness.

 

In her 2022 album ¡Ay!, she continues this erudite and abstract mode of creation. The record unfolds around an extraterrestrial being named Preta, who arrives on Earth and encounters, for the first time, distinctly human notions of temporality, corporeality, and love. Across its ten tracks, Dalt reframes the Latin American musical languages of her upbringing— bolero, son, and other South American traditions—through a science-fictional lens. Shimmering conga rhythms, jazz-inflected double bass, and tidal, oscillating distorted textures interweave to form a dense sonic fabric, where memory, folklore, and speculative imagination collapse into one another.

 

On July 7, 2025, Lucrecia Dalt’s heart temporarily stopped beating. A severe epileptic episode brought her life to the threshold between presence and absence. Eight seconds later, her heart
restarted, as if returning from the deepest edge of nothingness.

 

The following day, the Colombian musician released “caesi,” the third single from her upcoming album A Danger to Ourselves. The track articulates a central idea of the record: that only through a complete surrender to falling itself can one arrive at a form of transcendence. The album is produced by David Sylvian—founding member of the influential British new wave band Japan, and a long-term collaborator and partner of Dalt. Together, they construct a body of
work that traverses multiple sonic forms: trembling ballads, ghost-like R&B, and undulating electronic compositions. Dalt’s voice has always been striking, but on this record it carries a new intensity. English and Spanish flow through her singing with complete fluidity, shifting between languages without friction or rupture, as if linguistic boundaries have dissolved entirely within the vocal line.

 

A Danger to Ourselves marks a pivotal culmination of Lucrecia Dalt’s sonic explorations over more than a decade. The album signals a shift away from her earlier, more lo-fi aesthetic toward a clearer, more expansive, and richly layered sonic language, opening a striking new chapter in her artistic trajectory.

 

Here, experimentation and pop sensibility, intimacy and vastness, personal experience and universal emotion converge and intertwine, resulting in a deeply introspective yet highly immersive musical experience. It is both an inward gaze and an outward exploration. In this work, Lucrecia Dalt reminds us that within all unknown territories, desire itself may be the final frontier.
