Balletto di Roma 20th Anniversary Edition of Juliet and Romeo

Travelling through love and Shakespeare's classic

As the curtain rises and the music starts, the audience no longer sees the 14th century Italy of Shakespeare's writing, but travels back in time to the end of the Second World War, where a huge and dilapidated wall stands alone, with rubble scattered everywhere. The Balletto di Roma's version of Juliet and Romeo reconstructs the context of the era, strengthens the female role in the choice of title, and makes Juliet the protagonist of this love opera.

In this adaptation, the creative team got rid of the limitations of the original script, and independently adapted the plot to make the work more contemporary: the rebellious Juliet, the shy Romeo, the passionate balcony duet, etc. The choreographer fully demonstrated the emotional changes of the characters and their personalities through physical design The dancers conveyed the spirit of the romantic Patti through their fit bodies and dexterous limbs. Over the past twenty years, Balletto di Roma's version of Juliet and Romeo has not only been the company's reserved repertoire, but has also been regarded by the Italian media as "a milestone work in the Italian dance and theatre world".

Simplifying the film's atmosphere

In terms of visual presentation, "Juliet and Romeo" also takes advantage of the change of time and space to carry out a subversive interpretation. Instead of the ornate and cumbersome sets of classical ballet, a minimalist "conceptual" stage design is used, accompanied by "cinematic" lighting effects, which completely surpasses people's usual imagination of ballet.

On the stage, a high, dilapidated tin wall stood at all times, with people climbing painfully on the wall, while at other times the whole wall cracked open, letting out direct light from the audience. The audience can even see the shadows of famous Italian film directors Rossellini and Visconti through the set and costume design of the work.
