Jin Xing Dance Theatre
The Shanghai-based Jin Xing Dance Theatre is China's foremost contemporary dance company. It was established in 1999 by its founder and artistic director Jin Xing as the country's first private performing arts troupe. Within the 15 years since its foundation, the troupe has performed in nearly 20 countries, covering 4 different continents.
Jin Xing Dance Theatre became well renowned for its intriguing adaptation of modern Western dance styles, while remaining distinctively contemporary Chinese. In fact, the inexhaustibly rich heritage of Chinese culture is a major source of inspiration, as is the intentional exposure of the 16 company dancers to international artists, through training, workshops and collaborations.
The company and its founder's artistic achievements have received manifold recognition: amongst others, the company's signature choreography, Black and Red, received China's Ministry of Culture's award for best contemporary art.
The excellence of Jin Xing Dance Theatre has not only been acknowledged by international audiences and critics, but also by the Chinese Ministry of Culture.
Since 2010, the Ministry has asked the Jin Xing Dance Theatre on several occasions to serve as the country's 'Cultural Ambassador.' Thus, the company has provided an outstanding example of the People's Republic of China's contemporary art scene on an international stage, something unprecedented for a private performing troupe which has originated from this country.
The Jin Xing Dance Theatre Shanghai is Chinese contemporary performing arts at its best!
