“Dark” and “industrial” are the keywords forHangzhou producer GUAN. He works like a mechanic toiling away in an undergroundfactory warehouse, forging a sturdy exoskeletal armor from Techno,Industrial, and Glitch, and each time giving his audience a unique listeningexperience.

 

GUAN has already conquered dancefloors across Hangzhou and Shanghai — many revelers have surrendered to thesounds and atmospheres that he’s created over numerous performances at theemerging electronic scene in Hangzhou and Shanghai.

GUAN is also the founder of FunctionLab, one of China’spioneering electronic music labels. FunctionLab exudes an esoteric aestheticcharm thanks in part to GUAN’s art school background — the DJ and producer is alsopursuing a Master's degree in Open Media at the prestigious China Academy of Art.

 

The ambiguous club atmosphere being fermented by GUAN and co. combines agrotesque, rough, stroboscopic visual style with a thick noise wall that pushesbystanders into an alternative gravitational field.

In October of this year, D Force Records signeda deal with GUAN, and will release his debut EP Barbaric Kung on October 31.Produced by partner in crime Gooooose — the Shanghai producer and fellow DForce signee — Barbaric Kung pumps fierce new blood into China’sunderground club scene.

 

The entire EP is backlit with a certain, violentcolor. GUAN’s music meditates on the connection between violence and desire,and the anti-violence self-protection mechanisms inherent in the creativeprocess.

 

According to GUAN, an unlikely epiphany dawned on him upon watchingthe 2002 gross-out film, Jackass: "I felt a great shock inside, andthe fear of awe was born,” he says, explaining: “A bunch of silly guysdestroying themselves for no reason other than the pleasure of gaining theattention and fear of the world in this extremely nonsensical way.

The content comesfrom the experience of the punk era, reflections on the internet industry, andan aversion to many art forms produced by childhood art education.” GUAN wasinfluenced by the structural framework of Techno in his compositional process, also takingatmospheric cues from Industrial andGlitch.

 

The noise and club-built sounds are also mixed with sounds reminiscentof religious rituals, and all of this is intertwined with synthesized samples,the tortured sound of the human voice as fed through Google Translate.

 

Takenall together — and especially experienced live — Barbaric Kung is ashort shock to the system, an attempt to communicate a specific tone of violentdelight.

 

 

E-Saggila is an industrial electronic music producer from Toronto, Canada, and the head of the music label 'Summer Isle'.
