On October 14, 2023, the "Gala Concert by Christoph Eschenbach and CSIAF Orchestra," hosted by the China Shanghai International Arts Festival Center and Shanghai JUCE Cultural and Media, organized by the Shanghai Cultural Exchange Agency and Shanghai Jiushi Live, will be one of the opening performances of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival. It will resound with new melodies at the Shanghai Exhibition Center Fountain Square! Christoph Eschenbach, Angela Gheorghiu, and Maxim Vengerov will join forces with the CSIAF Orchestra for their global debut, delivering an artistic extravaganza that harmoniously blends symphony, violin solo, and vocal.
Conductor Christoph Eschenbach is among today's most distinguished conductors and pianists. In 2006, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Arts and Letters in France (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres). His ties with China run deep; not only did he mentor pianist Lang Lang in his musical career, but he also previously participated in the China Shanghai International Arts Festival in 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2016. For this performance, Eschenbach will take the baton with the CSIAF Orchestra, filling the Shanghai night sky with the resplendent sound of symphony.
The CSIAF Orchestra is a newly formed ensemble brought to life through the collaborative efforts of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival Center. It boasts the joint artistic direction of the legendary conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the renowned conductor Xu Zhong. This orchestra comprises principal musicians and outstanding talents from top domestic symphony orchestras, including the NCPA Orchestra, Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Ningbo Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Chengdu Symphony Orchestra, Fuzhou Strait Symphony Orchestra, and more. The CSIAF Orchestra will make its grand debut at this year's festival, featuring a world premiere performance.
Soprano Angela Gheorghiu is hailed as the most charismatic and gifted soprano in today's opera realm. In 2015, she received the European Cultural Award from the European Cultural Foundation. She is also a long-standing friend of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival. In 2014, she graced the festival with her solo performance, which happened to be the sole soprano solo concert of that year.
Violinist Maxim Vengerov is widely acclaimed as one of the world's "most thrilling violin performers." In 2004, he was awarded the Grammy for "Best Instrumental Soloist Performance." Vengerov made a notable appearance in Shanghai in 2014 when he participated in the inaugural performance of the Shanghai Symphony Hall. This event coincided with the 55th anniversary of the birth of the Chinese violin concerto "The Butterfly Lovers" (梁祝), and Vengerov performed this piece during the occasion.
It's worth mentioning that this performance not only gathers over a hundred top musical talents but also marks the largest outdoor symphony concert in Shanghai in recent years. During this event, the Shanghai Exhibition Center Fountain Square will host over 4,000 audiences . This magnificent Russian classical-style building will set the stage for an unparalleled night of classical symphony. We look forward to kicking off this arts festival with you, sharing the essence of global literature and art, and experiencing the unique charm of the 'Asian Performing Arts Capital' together!
