Event details

Experience classic films with live orchestral accompaniment in the spectacular surroundings of the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. A score played live by a full orchestra is probably the closest you will ever get to feeling like part of the film.

The English Patient is a 1996 American romantic war drama film directed by Anthony Minghella from his own script based on the novel of the same name by Michael Ondaatje and produced by Saul Zaentz. The film tells the story of Count László de Almásy, who is burned from a plane crash and tells his past story in flashbacks involving a romantic affair, while he is tended by a nurse.

The film was released to critical acclaim, and received 12 nominations at the 69th Academy Awards, eventually winning nine, including Best Picture, Best Director for Minghella, and Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche. Ralph Fiennes, playing the titular character, and Kristin Scott Thomas were Oscar-nominated for their performances. The film also won five BAFTA Awards and two Golden Globes. The British Film Institute ranked The English Patient the 55th greatest British film of the 20th century.

Ernst Van Tiel
During and immediately after his time as a student at the Conservatory of Utrecht studying percussion and piano, Ernst van Tiel conducted various Dutch broadcasting orchestras, including the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metropole Orchestra. Building up a firm musical partnership with these orchestras he subsequently conducted on many of their classical and jazz music recordings.

Eleanor Grant
Eleanor holds music and drama scholarships at her school and studies double bass at the Royal Academy of Music (Junior Academy) on Saturdays. In 2011 she was invited to join the Barbican Young Orchestra and performed at London's Barbican Concert Hall, conducted by Edward Gardner. In 2013 she worked with BYO under the baton of Dudamel and in 2014 with Ed Gardner again at Milton Court. In the summer of 2016, Eleanor was selected to play with the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble at The Last Night of the Proms, performing the world premiere of "Raze" by Tom Harrold.
