2026 Shanghai Jing'an Drama Festival
THE 120TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF SAMUEL BECKETT
Armazém Theatre Company
Dias Felizes (Happy Days)

Happy Days is a classic masterpiece by Samuel Beckett, a master of absurd theater and Nobel laureate. This performance will be presented by Armazém Theatre Company.

This masterpiece of absurd drama depicts the resilience and dignity of humanity in the face of existential difficulties in a minimalist stage form: a woman buried in a mound, only revealing her upper body, performing daily rituals such as brushing her teeth, applying lipstick, and talking to herself day after day.

In Happy Days, Beckett uses the most restrained language to explore how humans maintain dignity, find meaning, and continue living in the most extreme situations. The female protagonist Winnie maintains her passion and anticipation for life as she is gradually engulfed by the soil. Her fragmented conversations with her almost silent partner Willie form the most touching spiritual scene in absurd drama.

Armazém Theatre Company will reinterpret this classic with its unique visual language and bodily expression, transforming Beckett's minimalist text into a breathtakingly immersive stage scene.

Artistic Features
·Minimalist stage aesthetics
The stage design of this play is very simple: a wilderness, a mound, and two characters. But this simplicity actually amplifies the inner world and existential dilemma of the characters, allowing the audience to feel the surge of emotions on the seemingly empty stage.

·Philosophical significance in repetition
Winnie repeated this ritual day after day: brushing her teeth, applying lipstick, and tidying up items. These actions may seem meaningless, but in the repetition, there is a philosophical weight that transcends daily life, thus becoming a way to fight against nothingness.

·The True Human Nature in Absurdity
Although the situation is extremely absurd, Winnie's emotions, memories, fears, and hopes are the most authentic portrayal of human nature. Her perseverance in adversity has become a symbol of human spiritual resilience.

Samuel Beckett
Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) was one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century and a recipient of the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature. As a representative figure of absurd drama, Beckett's works explore the fundamental issues of human existence in a minimalist form. Waiting for Godot "(1952) ushered in a new era of modern drama and established his position in the history of world theater. Happy Days (1961) is Beckett's mid career masterpiece, continuing his deep exploration of existential dilemmas. In this work, Beckett uses the most restrained stage language to depict the human situation when facing the passage of time, physical aging, and spiritual loneliness. The play has been performed in hundreds of versions around the world and is considered one of the most important theatrical works of the 20th century.

Armazém Theatre Company
Armazém Theatre Company, founded in 1987, is located in the city of Londrina, Paran á state, a city thriving in the arts. The theater troupe is led by director and co-founder Paul Mariels and actor Patricia Sellongk, whose exploration and experimentation with stage art in their youth deeply influenced the direction of the troupe's development. The name " Armazém " comes from the venue occupied by the theater troupe in its early days, which used to be a coffee warehouse and later became a long-term rehearsal and innovative thinking incubator for the troupe.

Since settling in Rio de Janeiro in 1998, Armazém Theatre Company has caused a sensation in the city with its adaptation of "Alice's Adventures in the Looking Glass". In this work, Paul envisioned a stage magic box that makes the audience feel like the protagonist of the story, passing through a mirror, happily sliding down a slide to another stage, and then gradually subdividing their choices. This is a breakthrough attempt by the theater troupe to establish resonance with the audience.

Although Armazém Theatre Company is known for its stunning visual performance and influential productions, it focuses more on performing arts, pursuing dynamic expression through body, sound, and thought. In the process of development, the theater troupe has always been committed to exploring a dispersed language style and rearranging the world from an internal perspective. This perspective has become the voice of Armazém Theatre Company and the center of its representation of the world.

Armazém Theatre Company has won over 100 important awards in Brazil, demonstrating outstanding performance.
