Chinese traditions meet modern dance in The Moon Opera, by Wang Yabin. This dance drama is based on the novel by the same name by Bi Feiyu, and tells the story of Xiao Yanqiu, who is to play the lead in the classical Chinese opera Flying to the Moon. Slowly but surely her life on stage and her real life become intermingled, and soon enough, the character she plays cannot be separated from who she is. This dance is a tale of jealousy, love, talent and rejection, in a performance with both Chinese and Western aesthetics.
Wang Yabin is a star of Chinese dance, and is especially known for her dancing role in the movie House of Flying Daggers. The former TV and movie actress has since 2009 built up her company Yabin & Her Friends. The Moon Opera is their seventh performance, one in which Chinese and Western aesthetics meet on stage.
