The horse is a universal symbol shared across human civilizations. The red icon from the forests of Northern Europe carries 400 years of a father’s love and longing. Meanwhile, Chinese intangible cultural heritage, shaped by the Five Elements and Five Symbols, preserves millennia of artisanship and everyday warmth. This summer, by the Huangpu River, at the The Grand Halls, a heartfelt encounter between Eastern and Western traditional crafts officially begins.

A 14-Meter Giant Dala Horse Lands on the North Bund

An eye-catching landmark – start your journey here. Sweden’s national treasure arrives as a new icon on the Huangpu River, setting the world record for the tallest Dala Horse and becoming Shanghai’s most recognizable summer cultural destination. Inside the exhibition hall, a romantic carousel art installation immerses you in a world of wooden horses, guiding you into the heartwarming stories of the Nordic forests and the gentle craftsmanship passed down through 400 years.

Five Elements, Five Symbols – Understanding the Cultural Universe of the Chinese Horse

Fire – Epic Brilliance: Tang Sancai (three-color glazed pottery) and Shiwan clay sculptures – centuries of flowing glaze and light.

Earth – Warmth and Depth: Fengxiang clay sculptures, Clay Figure Zhang, and Shanghai-style dough figurines – capturing the spirit of the land.

Metal – Elegance and Strength: Yongkang tin carving, bronze artistry, Gu embroidery, and Su embroidery – showcasing refined craftsmanship.

Water – Poetic Grace: Blue calico prints and dragon-phoenix cheongsam – evoking Eastern elegance.

Wood – Natural Essence: Boxwood carving, Shanghai-style paper cutting, and Jinshan wheat straw painting – honoring nature’s simplicity.

A Dialogue Between Two Generations of Inheritors – Living Heritage Alive

Tang Sancai: Gao Shuiwang × Gao Zhe – father and son keeping the kiln flame alive.

Fengxiang Clay Sculpture: Hu Xinming × Hu Jinwei – father and son passing on the art of clay.

Shanghai-Style Paper Cutting: Li Shoubai × Li Shiyi – father and daughter making flowers bloom from paper.
Generation after generation, artisans carry forward their original aspirations, keeping ancient crafts vibrant in the modern age.
