The history of I Musici is extraordinary and unique. Founded in 1951 in Rome where it debuted on March 30th 1952 at Santa Cecilia, they are the oldest active chamber music group in the world. They are best known for illuminating modern society's path to eighteenth-century Italian music by rediscovering and then making the very first recordings of many Baroque masterpieces. They were the first to introduce Vivaldi's most important work 'The Four Seasons' to the world. From the first ever stereophonic recording of The Four Seasons, they sold worldwide more than 25 million copies, making it one of the most famous pieces of music in the classical repertoire. The ensemble went on to make the first classic music video in the 1970s, and recorded the first classic music Compact Disc for Philips. Nowadays their repertoire spans the eighteenth century to the contemporary, and they are dedicatees of important works by important composers such as Nino Rota, Ennio Porrino, Valentino Bucchi, Louis Bacalov, Ryūichi Sakamoto, Ennio Morricone and many others.
During their long and successful career I Musici have repeatedly performed in the most important concert halls around the world, building a solid, trusting and deep relationship with a loyal audience of all ages. From the city of Rome as an ideal departing hub, they have performed in thousands cities, really hard to list them all, in Italy, England, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Latvia, Hungary, Turkey, Tunisia, South Africa, in almost all States of USA including Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Macau, Taiwan, China and South Korea, always performing in the world's most prestigious concert halls, theatres, festivals and concert seasons. They have often enthusiastically shared the stage with internationally renowned soloists such as Heinz Holliger, Albrecht Mayer, Pepe Romero, Giuliano Carmignola, Stephen Hough, Sergei Nakariakov, Alison Balsom, Ulises Passarella, Maurice Steger, Sumi Jo.
I Musici recorded exclusively for Philips for more than four decades. Their disc production, a true goldmine of compositions from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, has repeatedly been awarded prizes by specialized juries. These have included the Grand Prix de l’Academie Charles Cros, Grand Prix International du Disque, the Edison Award, Deutsche Schallplattenpreis and the Grand Prix des Discophiles. Their production of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons won the Platinum Disc with inset diamond. Recently they recorded several CDs and LPs for Universal, Fonè, Dynamic, Sony-Epic, Warner, Sony Classics, Deutsche Grammophon, Decca (with which they published their Eighth edition of The Four Seasons in 2022).
The members have renewed over time, but a serious internal selection guarantees the continuity of the values ad the mission that the group has promised to carry on. Recently, I Musici have decided to dedicate an important part of their activity to the musical education also by establishing scholarships, with the conviction that music can contribute to making people and the world better. In their special concerts for children I Musici have met thousands of kids and will continue in the future to bring them Music as the most beautiful thing that life has given us.
