RPO Co-Principal Violist Wenhan Jiang Makes Solo Debut in Shanghai with a Journey Across Centuries
On June 30, Wenhan Jiang, Co-Principal Violist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, will make his debut on the "One Person, One Concert" series stage at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. For this unique recital, Jiang brings two distinct string instruments spanning eras and forms: the modern viola and the Baroque shoulder cello.
In a single evening, three hundred years of musical evolution will be reawakened under his bow. As a "poet of strings" navigating both modern and Baroque repertoires, Jiang’s career is rooted in the experience of one of the world's leading orchestras. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music with the highest honor, the DipRAM (Distinction), he studied under Paul Silverthorne, former Principal Violist of the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also claimed top prizes at prestigious international competitions, including the Theodore Holland and Oskar Nedbal competitions.
Jiang’s artistry knows no borders, with performances spanning the globe—from the stages of the Berlin Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall to Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, as well as appearances at the Lucerne Festival and the Pacific Music Festival. Formerly the Principal Violist of the Ulster Orchestra, he continues to perform as a guest principal with elite ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, cementing his prominent status on the international stage.
