Cello | Wang Jian
Wang Jian began studying the cello at the age of four under the guidance of his father, who was his first teacher. In 1981, at twelve, he made his debut with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the Shanghai Concert Hall, performing Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto. In 1985, encouraged and supported by violinist Isaac Stern, Wang embarked on his studies in the United States, enrolling at the Yale School of Music to study with renowned cellist Aldo Parisot.

As a soloist, Wang has collaborated with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has worked under the batons of such legendary conductors as Claudio Abbado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Myung-Whun Chung, and Gustavo Dudamel. He also maintains frequent collaborations with all of China’s top orchestras and conductors.

Wang served as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the first Artist-in-Residence of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Artist-in-Residence of the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra. He currently holds the position of International Chair of Cello at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and serves on the Artistic Committees of both the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2022, he has been Professor of Cello and Doctoral Supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Wang performs on a cello generously loaned by the family of the late Mr. Lin Shourong.

Since then, his concert tours have taken him to every corner of the globe—from his native Sweden across Europe, North and South America, China, Japan, and beyond.

Söllscher has maintained long-standing collaborations with leading Nordic orchestras and has performed with ensembles such as the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bern Chamber Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. His distinguished conducting partners include Claudio Abbado, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Alexander Gibson, Sixten Ehrling, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. He is also a frequent guest at the Verbier Festival and other major international music festivals throughout Europe.

As an exclusive artist for Deutsche Grammophon (DG), Söllscher has recorded over 20 solo albums, including a highly acclaimed complete set of Bach’s lute works. In 2006, he was awarded the Royal Medal “Litteris et Artibus” by the King of Sweden. He is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
