Condensing the cultural microcosm of modern and contemporary Shanghai cities
How exactly has the new Shanghai been built since 1949?
On 29 April 2025, the West Bund Museum will present its first self-curated special exhibition, ‘Building Shanghai: Architecture, City and Culture since 1949’, the world's first systematic study and presentation of the history of Shanghai's contemporary architecture and urban development.
The exhibition focuses on the evolution of Shanghai's architecture and urban space from the founding of New China to the present day. Through the types of housing, new city development, public cultural buildings, and urban renewal, the exhibition reveals the complex connection between local creativity and global cultural change, and leads the audience into a seventy-five-year history of the city's founding, where the common memories and emotions of several generations have been brought together.
