Since its inception in 1987, Béjart Ballet Lausanne is always a reference in the choreography world. Béjart Ballet Lausanne is one of the very few companies able to fill vast spaces such as Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, the Kremlin State Palace of Moscow, and the Palace of Congress in Paris, etc.. It has also appeared on the stage of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival for many times.
In the coming 22nd China Shanghai International Arts Festival, Béjart Ballet Lausanne will present two performances, "Tous les hommes presque toujours s’imaginent" and "7 danses grecques", from October 19 to 21, 2023. These two ballets will land at the Shanghai Culture Square. Looking forward to meeting the audience at the theatre and experiencing the stunning beauty of ballet brought by the company.
Tous les hommes presque toujours s’imaginent
Choreography | Gil Roman
Music | John Zorn
Premiere | Lausanne Opera, April 5, 2019
The performance is choreographed by Gil Roman, the artistic director of Béjart Ballet Lausanne, and based on the music of John Zorn, an avant-garde musician. John Zorn is one of the leading composers of contemporary American music. He is also an outstanding multi-instrumentalist. His works are unique, audacious and free. Gil Roman immerses himself in the musical universe created by this musician from 1990 to 2017. Step by step, with a movement, a gesture, Gil Roman brings his dancers beyond the walls.
7 danses grecques
Choreography | Maurice Béjart
Music | Mikis Theodorakis
Premiere | City Center, New York, October 3, 1983
"7 danses grecques" is hailed as the most successful and most Greek dance. It is based on the music of Mikis Theodorakis, an 20th-century Greek composer, and recreates the Greek dance of Maurice Béjart, a legendary choreographer. While seeking the essence of Greek dance, Maurice Béjart tried to minimize borrowing from authentic Greek dance “steps" to avoid the use of obvious folkloric quotations. The dancers wear costumes like those that they wear in the studio and dance like Bach's fugue, pursuing the reconstruction of the inner soul. This unique creative concept, according to the Greeks who have seen this performance, makes its "Greek feeling" more present.
