Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 was written in three days, the extremely compact and focused piece consists of 5 movements and last about 20 mins. Filled with quotations of other pieces by composer, you can find moments of Symphony Nos. 1 & 5, Piano Trio No. 2, and even an aria from Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.
Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 4, Op. 18 No. 4 is written between 1898 and 1800, a product of his ‘middle’ period. The piece consists of four movements and is a vivid collection of composer’s earlier materials. The bright and grandiose texture provides a perfect contrast to the Shostakovich’s piece. It is frequently performed in chamber concerts worldwide.
