Sir Antonio Pappano is one of the most sought-after conductors on the international stage today, renowned worldwide for his charismatic artistry and masterful interpretations, with distinguished achievements in both opera and symphonic repertoire. He currently serves as Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Emeritus of the Royal Opera House and Ballet at Covent Garden, and Honorary Music Director of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, having previously held the post of Music Director at these two institutions from 2002 to 2024 and 2005 to 2023, respectively.
Pappano honed his craft in his early years as a pianist, repetiteur, and assistant conductor at leading opera houses across Europe and the Americas, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and made multiple appearances at the Bayreuth Festival as musical assistant to Daniel Barenboim. In 2012, he was awarded both the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and a Knighthood in the Order of the British Empire for his services to music; in 2015, he became the 100th recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, regarded as one of classical music's highest honours.
In 2021, Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu won the Gold Medal at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, and has since established himself as one of the most compelling pianists of his generation. Known not only for his dazzling virtuosity but also for his keen artistic insight, his playing has been described by *The New York Times* as "mercurial" and by *BBC Music Magazine* as "breathtakingly beautiful."
Highlights of his 2025/26 season include several major international tours: a tour to Japan with the Bavarian State Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski; a tour to China with the Staatskapelle Dresden and Daniele Gatti; and a tour to Germany, Austria, Belgium, and Paris (France) with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Kazuki Yamada. As a featured artist-in-focus with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, he appears multiple times this season, collaborating with Franz Welser‑Möst and Gustavo Gimeno.
Founded in 1904, the London Symphony Orchestra is one of the world's earliest orchestras to be artistically self-governed by its musicians. Through generations of distinguished artists, the LSO has earned a global reputation for exceptional performance quality, forward-looking artistic vision, and a commitment to making music accessible to all. As the resident orchestra of the Barbican Centre, the LSO performs around 70 concerts each year. Its core artistic roster includes: Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, Conductor Emeritus Sir Simon Rattle, Principal Guest Conductors Gianandrea Noseda and François‑Xavier Roth, Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas, and Collaborating Artists Barbara Hannigan and André J. Thomas. The LSO holds key artistic residencies in Paris, Tokyo, and the Aix‑en‑Provence Festival, while continuing to expand its presence across Asia and Australia.
The London Symphony Orchestra believes that great music should be heard by everyone, everywhere—whether by devoted concertgoers in the hall or by first‑time listeners discovering classical music around the world.
