Wilde
by Mala Voadora & Miguel Pereira (Portugal)
Wilde draws from the universe of Oscar Wilde. And his play Lady Windermere’s Fan – a satire on Victorian moralism. It is an attempt to appropriate a radio version of the play, produced by BBC Radio 7 – an object from the past, itself an appropriation of a play from its past. The performers – all dressed as Lady Windermere – move around illustrating the recording, lip-sync, act over the recording, come together to play some characters, sing in an operetta register, fulfil choreographies. The formal aspects acquire a progressive freedom as the libertarian narrative unfolds.
Mala Voadora was founded in 2003 by Jorge Andrade and José Capela, its artistic directors. Jorge Andrade directs most of the shows and often writes the texts. The diversity of mala Voadora's shows also stems from the diversity of national and international artists invited to its projects. Miguel Pereira is a Portuguese choreographer. As a creator, his work has been presented across Europe, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile and he is regularly invited to teach in composition labs and workshops in Portugal and abroad.
