A modern-day couple dream of entering the universe of Macbeth in the buried past of China. Assuming the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, they encounter a string of events, from which they become aware of the darker sides of their minds and the intricacies of humanities. Upon leaving the dream, they have to come to terms with their newfound self in this turbulent, contemporary world.
Inspired by different traditions of Asian theatre and systems of physical theatre training, this interpretation of the Scottish play by the acclaimed Hong Kong director Tang Shu-wing is minimalised into a succession of stylised imageries, with aesthetics and body language almost comparable to that of dance, revealing the multi-dimensionality of the characters, time and space, through a unique interplay of the body, music, and mise-en-scène.
In this edition, the actors playing Macbeth and Lady Macbeth will reverse their roles in the second act, compelling the audience to examine the implications of gender roles in modern society and the different facets of human nature in its psychological dimensions.
