The Play

The highest-rated performance in the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Songs of Lear is an ensemble-driven, constantly evolving original work that invites audiences to witness the fruition of an intimate artistic process. Using crucial scenes from King Lear, it weaves a story using gestures, words and music, exploring the subtle energies and beautiful rhythms that govern one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Through this musical exploration of the text, melody becomes the embodiment of character, relationships and drama. London’s The Guardian exclaims, it “seems to have already passed into legend even though it’s only a work in progress.”

Critical Acclaim

Songs Of Lear is not only the most deeply affecting show I have seen in Edinburgh, it is also one of the most profoundly moving theatre productions I have ever experienced.

My five stars were laid bare on outstretched palms, offered in reverence. The director conducts his company like a classical orchestra. They outperform, reinventing conventional forms of character and plot, and theatre altogether. Though fresh, it is fearlessly archaic in its grandeur.”

Transcendent... For the half hour that followed, I was static electricity, too knock-kneed to stand. This is the essence of Lear, sensed rather than watched and absorbed until it hasn’t just got under your skin, but right into your bone marrow.”

Raw and highly sophisticated... an impressive piece that lingers after the performers have bowed (to standing ovations) and the sweltering space has cleared, so that Songs of Lear continue to reverberate within you.”

About Song of the Goat Theatre

Established in 1996 by Grzegorz Bral and Anna Zubrzycki, Song of the Goat Theatre (Teatr Pieśń Kozła) has developed an international reputation as one of Europe’s most innovative training-based theatre companies, committed to researching what makes theatre distinctive to other art-forms. From its base in Wroclaw, Poland, the Company constantly develops its approaches and performances with the aim of unlocking theatre’s power to offer audiences a profound experience that can reaffirm their own sensitivity and humanity. Song of the Goat Theatre’s ever-evolving training, rehearsal and performance process are treated as laboratories, enabling the Company to research the craft of the actor and director and to evolve new techniques, performance languages and work. A distinctive element of the Company’s practice is a search for connection, meeting and openness as the seeds of authentic experience. This commitment to connection informs the development of each new training approach, which always seeks to integrate movement, voice, song and text, creating performance that has an inherent musicality and connects with the audience on a sensory level.

Through this training-based theatre, the Company continues to enrich not only its own practice and performance, but also to invest in the artistic development of the actors and practitioners it collaborates with. Song of the Goat Theatre has developed a major profile for the quality and distinctiveness of its pedagogical work, which is an integrated part of the Company’s approach – a way to enrich as well as to disseminate its own practice.
