Lotic(Live)
Raised in Houston, Morgan relocated to Berlin six years ago with nothing but a chip on their shoulder about American Life and a decade’s worth of experience making music in mostly scholastic settings: marching band, college studies in music theory and field recording, and campus radio. They integrated into Berlin life as a DJ, but it was production work - particularly 2015’s Heterocetera EP, released on Tri Angle Records, and the Agitations mixtape - that brought Lotic’s cutting, phantasmal take on club music and composition to wider recognition.

Picture Disney’s Maleficent or The Wiz’s Evillene in the club. That’s what the grinding, playful energy of Heterocetera and Lotic DJ sets bring to mind.

And their newest project, the debut full-length Power, lassos that glossy darkness to Texas drums and the considered narrative of a movie score. In the video for the lead single “Hunted,” Morgan channels Aaliyah’s Queen Of The Damned while whispering a queer nightmare: “Brown skin, masculine frame/head’s a target/ actin’ real feminine/make them vomit.” Unforced and unseen, Morgan shares the impulse behind the morbid and intimacy perspective behind Power: “Anything I’m afraid of I’m putting it on the record.”

John T. Gast(Live)
John T. Gast is a reclusive figure best known for his affiliations with London duo Hype Williams. He has a co-production credit on their 2012 LP Black Is Beautiful, and worked with both members after the group split up, appearing briefly on Dean Blunt's The Redeemer and collaborating with Inga Copeland on the UKMerge 12-inch. While his stylistic coordinates may be different, that pranksterish pair remain the best means of understanding Gast's approach.

By turns playful and mysterious, Gast's music draws on a range of genres to build eccentric sonic worlds. As in Blunt's latest music, Gast's cryptic modes of presentation conceal age-old romantic themes. In the statement accompanying Excerpts, Gast tells of "a particularly fierce winter. Woman reasserting power. Man fighting in the dark. The Cold War continues." Excerpts is diverse in mood and style, but it's this grim, lovelorn tone that marks its best moments.

Shlømo
Shlømo is at the heart of the French techno underground. In just a couple of years he has swiftly emerged with his own distinctive sound, mostly on his own Taapion Records but also on influential labels like Delsin, Singular records and Arts Collective. Balancing real feeling with all important dancefloor function, his sets and productions marry stark moods with absorbing atmospheres and for that reason have found favour with key techno tastemakers around the globe.

With a distinct ear for authentic grooves and mesmeric sound design, Shlømo is as captivating in the club as he is in the studio.

His live show is an extension of that creative space and finds him cooking up compelling sound tracks using gear like a Nord 1, Korg MS20, Roland TR-8, Mikrokorg and Korg Mono/Poly, not to mention his atmospheric live performances under his full name ‘Shaun Baron-Carvais’, following the alias’ debut at Berlin Atonal 2017. As a DJ, too, he is a master of pacing and spacing and can trap you in a high pressure groove or allow you to drift on a dark mood with equal élan, either solo or with label mates PVNV and AWB under the Taapion Soundsytem moniker.

Exos
"Iceland is a very different place. Many people say it isn't even meant for living—the earth is very thin in places and that affects the electromagnetic fields. Inspiration from nature is important and you can hear that clearly in Icelandic techno." These are the words of Arnvidur Snorrason, AKA Exos, the artist behind this week's RA podcast. For techno heads of a certain vintage, Exos is a name that stirs excitement. He's been putting out classy dub techno since the late '90s on labels like Mosaic and Thule (a crucial hub for Icelandic techno).

One of his biggest fans is Nina Kraviz, who in 2014 re-released his 1998 track, "Nuclear Red Guard," on Without A Moment's Notice, An Octopus Appeared And Devoured Everyone In Sight, the first record on her Trip label. Since then Snorrason has returned to prominence, appearing on Trip three more times, and joining Kraviz for a back-to-back at Awakenings Festival in 2016.

Growing up in Reykjavík, Snorrason started making techno at the age of 16, inspired by a weekly radio show called Party Zone and the music of Juan Atkins, Basic Channel and Joey Beltram. His RA podcast begins back where it all started for Snorrason, in 1992, before taking us through a selection of rave and techno that's inspired him in the decades since.

Low Jack
Philippe Hallais is a French electronic music artist born in 1985 in Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and currently living in Paris, where he operates Editions Gravats / Les Disques De La Bretagne with Jean Carval.

He is celebrated for his distinct club constructions, fluidly stepping between dancehall, sound art and techno territories. He has published three albums under the pseudonym Low Jack (Garifuna Variations, L.I.E.S, 2014 ; Sewing Machine, In Paradisum, 2015 ; Lighthouse Stories, Modern Love, 2016) and one under his own name, "An American Hero" (Modern Love, 2017).

Tzusing
Tzusing was born in Malaysia, spent his formative years in Singapore and the Taiwanese manufacturing center of Taichung, studied in Chicago, and is currently based between Shanghai and Taipei. His music exists in this condition of dislocation, forged at the complicated intersection of personal, social, and national identity.

In 2011 Tzusing founded Shanghai’s “Stockholm Syndrome” night, hosted at the now-legendary Shelter, and was introduced to the wider world through a trilogy of EPs on L.I.E.S. Records beginning in 2014. He has since made appearances on Cititrax and Public Possession, and in February 2017 released his debut LP 東方不敗 through L.I.E.S. “Hollaback Boi,” his collaboration with Samo DJ, was listed in Resident Advisor’s Top 50 Tracks of 2016.

Tzusing has performed sets for Boiler Room, Red Bull Music Academy, and Tokyo’s Dommune, as well as DJing Berghain for 2017’s CTM Festival. Further plans for the year include tours through Asia, North America, and Europe.
