The small county of Jixi is famous for its beautiful landscape. Nestled between the mountain ranges of Huangshan and Tianzhushan, with the rivers, Yangtze and Qiantang, running along its sides, it is a true embodiment of the ideal that Man should be in harmony with Nature.
Jixi is not only known for its natural scenery, but also for its profound cultural heritage.
As one scholar describes Jixi:
“You wander into a village, it seems you have flipped a page of a history book, any stone you step on, your step will touch a dynasty.”
Jixi is the birthplace of Hui culture - Hui cuisine, Hui Opera (which Peking Opera originated from), and Hui rice paper for painting and calligraphy. It is one of the villages in this district that is trying to preserve the only few old buildings that weren’t destroyed by the Cultural Revolution. The old Hui folks used to trade salt along the Jing Keng Caravan Trail, part of the Hui Hang Ancient Caravan Trail, which we will be hiking along during our trip.
