Weekly Departures - Let’s go on a family trip… to JAPAN!!

 

Take some time away on this 12-day trip with your beloved family to the country of cherry blossoms, anime and ramen. From the metropolitan city of Tokyo, to the stunning temples of Kyoto, we know that this is a trip that will leave your family wishing they didn’t have to leave Japan! Delve into the rich culture of Japan as we spend the night in a ryokan (Japanese inn), take a calligraphy class, visit the famous Manga museum, eat only the freshest fish at the Tsukiji Fish Market, and even more! We’ve got a great selection of places to see and things to do, but don’t let that stop you from adding on some optional activities provided from our list -- like watching a robot show and relaxing in a Japanese onsen (hot spring)!!

 

Dates: Depart whenever you choose! Just let us know when you want to go.

 

Day 1 - Arrival in Tokyo

  • Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to the hotel; get a good night’s rest before the trip begins!
    • We will provide details on how to reach your hotel with public transport, unless you would prefer us to arrange a private transfer with an extra charge

 

Day 2 - Tokyo

    • Meet your adventure leader in the lobby of your accommodation.
      • We will get a quick briefing on the information we need to know in order to have a safe and smooth trip in Japan.
    • Enjoy the tranquil scenery of Shinjuku Gyoen, one of Tokyo’s largest parks.
      • In the spring, it becomes one of the most popular places to see cherry blossoms.
    • Head over to the top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to experience some awesome views.
    • Learn about Buddhism at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa.

 

  • Take a shot at one of Japan’s national obsessions, baseball, at a local batting cage (optional) (400JPY/person)!

 

 

Day 3 - Tokyo

  • Watch sumo wrestlers train in the sumo district!
  • Discover Tokyo’s rich history at the fascinating Edo-Tokyo museum.
  • Visit the famous Ghibli Museum, which showcases work produced by Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation studio that is best known for its anime productions.
  • Walk across the famous Shibuya Crossing, and watch the chaos from the Tsutaya building.
  • Stop by the Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who were responsible for igniting Japan’s transformation from a feudal state into a capitalist and imperial world power.
  • Experience the fashionable district of Harajuku!

 

Day 4 - Tokyo

    • Indulge in a fresh sushi breakfast at Tsukiji Fish Market!
    • Try your hand in sushi making at a sushi workshop, where you will also learn about its evolution from a fish preservation technique to a Japanese delicacy.

 

  • (Optional) Learn about the history and spirit of the samurai at the Samurai Museum (1,800JPY/person).
  • (Optional) Visit Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo’s largest and arguably most beautiful park (200JPY/person).
  • (Optional) Attend and watch a robot show to watch robots, ninja’s and dinosaurs put on an awesome performance (5,000JPY/person)!

 

 

Day 5 - Hakone

    • Hop on a train from Tokyo to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park (a 60 min journey)
    • Spend the night in a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese Inn.

 

  • (Optional) Spend the afternoon relaxing in a Japanese onsen (hot spring) (1,400JPY/person).
  • (Optional) Take a glimpse at Mt. Fuji by taking the Hakone Ropeway for an epic cable car ride or boat ride through the national park (4,000JPY/person).

 

 

Day 6 - Kyoto

  • Take a bullet train to Kyoto in under two hours!
  • Wander the hillside streets to the stunning Kiyomizu Dera temple and get a picturesque view of Kyoto.
  • Visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto that is famous for its red vermilion torii gates.
  • Go for sake tasting at the Sake Museum and learn about its history.

 

Day 7 - Kyoto

    • Check out the world-renowned international Manga museum that houses over 300,000 publications.
    • Visit the district of Arashiyama and get lost in the maze of bamboo paths and shrines as you head up to its monkey park. At the top, take in the stunning panoramic view of Kyoto and get-up close and personal with the monkeys.
    • Move on to see the Tenryu-Ji temple, ranked number one of the five great Zen temples in Kyoto’s Arashiyama district.
    • Make sure you visit the Dharma Hall. As you enter the hall, look up to spot the dragon’s eyes on the ceiling – they will follow you everywhere!

 

  • (Optional) Head to the karaoke bar in the evening, and sing your heart out in one of Japan’s favourite past times
  • Beware, we are not taking you to any ordinary bar, expect a fun twist to your evening out! (350JPY/person. – 30min).

 

Day 8 - Kyoto

    • Learn the art of Japanese calligraphy in a master run workshop.
    • Roam through Pontocho Alley, full of lanterns and intimate wood-paneled restaurants. Enjoy sake and appreciate the wandering geishas.

 

  • (Optional) Explore Gion District and go to a traditional Japanese performance at the Gion Corner Theatre. Witness a tea ceremony, Gagaku (court music), Kyōgen (early comic plays), Kyōmai (Kyoto-style dance), and a Bunraku (puppet theatre) show. (3,100JPY/person and 2,200JPY/child).

 

 

Day 9 - Kyoto - Hiroshima

    • Start the day with a Zazen meditation session at Daisen-in Temple.
      • Led by a Buddhist Zen monk, the meditation will leave you feeling relaxed and re-energized!
    • After practising Japanese mindfulness, explore the temple and an informal tea ceremony.

 

  • (Optional) Head to one of the most iconic sites of Kyoto: The Golden Pavilion at the Kinkaku-Ji Zen Buddhist Temple. (400JPY/person)
  • (Optional) Hire a bike outside the Golden Pavilion and cycle to the Imperial Palace Gardens. This public park is beautifully landscaped around the walls of the palace, with quaint bridges and ponds. (1,400JPY/person)

 

  • In the afternoon, jump on the bullet train to Hiroshima – a 111min journey.
  • For dinner, head to an Okonomiyaki restaurant for a classic Hiroshima experience.

 

Day 10 - Hiroshima

  • Learn about Hiroshima’s tragic past at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Its structure was all that was left standing near the hypocenter of the atomic bomb. Find out about the city’s recovery and its pacifist mission for a peaceful and nuclear-free world.
  • Take a short ferry trip to Miyajima and head to Itsukushima shrine, a registered world heritage site. Explore the islands waterfalls and stunning beaches.
  • In the evening, dine at Sushi Tai and order sushi and sashimi for a delicious meal.

 

Day 11 - Osaka

  • Hop on the bullet train to Shin-Osaka – an 88 min journey.
  • Visit Osaka Castle, a famous Japanese landmark that represented the new and unified Japan under Toyotomi.
    • The castle can now be visited as a museum.
  • Let the games begin! Visit a nine-story gaming arcade in the heart of Osaka for a modern Japanese experience.

 

Day 12 - Osaka - Tokyo

  • Ascend the Umeda Sky Tower and enjoy your final brunch in Osaka
  • Say goodbye to your guide before catching the final bullet train back to Tokyo (to finish up or continue your travels!)

If you want to stay longer than the trip dates, no problem.  Please book your tickets accordingly and leave a note in the comments section of the registration form. If you take a different flight, make sure you arrive/leave on time for the transfers to/from the slopes or you will have to arrange for your own transportation.

Cancellation & Disclaimer:

If the traveler decides to cancel, s/he can get refund of the deposit (a small cancellation fee may apply) within 10 days of booking if before 90 days prior to departure and no refund after that. If cancellation should be made after 60 days prior to departure, no refund of the full trip fee can be given.
