The theme park is nearly as large as five Olympic-sized swimming pools, spanning three floors of the Shanghai Mart Retail Mall. The theme park's design incorporates Shanghai's unique characteristics, though each floor showcases different Shanghainese styles to display and explore different eras in the city's history.
Japan’s Sanrio company, the kawaii connoisseurs who created Hello Kitty in 1974, have licensed her image to Shimao Group, which owns and runs Shanghai Mart, for the design and operation of this all-new theme park.
“In the old glorious days of the 1920s and 30s, Shanghai women wore western-style skirts and contemporary hair-cuts. They were fashion icons for the nation... Even today, every Chinese person draws inspiration from old Shanghai, with its concepts of the romantic and other such legendary attributes. While for Hello Kitty, the furry kitten has gained worldwide popularity, adored by people of all ages.” Said Eddie Yang, Shimao’s vice president.
This combination will be blended throughout the entire theme park, including Shanghai-style dolls, set meals, and other limited edition products only available here. Further, the whole theme park very much focuses on providing interactive and immersive experiences for all visitors.
The design is influenced by the concepts of the Opera House's classical architectural style, but the park architects will give the concepts a fresh, modern twist.
