Produced by Dove Attia, the creator of Mozart l'opéra rock and Molière, le spectacle musical, the French musical Le Roi Soleil was premiered in 2005 with the direction and choreography of Kamel Ouali. The musical tells the story of the life and loves of Louis XIV. Le Roi Soleil took France by storm with its unforgettable melodies, spectacular choreography, and sumptuous costumes. More than 1.6 million spectators attended 380 performances in France, Switzerland, and Belgium, making this musical a true cultural phenomenon of the 2000s.

 

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, a brand-new revival of Le Roi Soleil is returning to Paris in December 2025, with already more than 350,000 tickets sold before the premiere, followed by a smash hit French tour. With both fidelity to the original work and the contemporary flair, the legendary French musical is now given a second incarnation. In October 2026, Le Roi Soleil will come to China and be staged on Shanghai Culture Square for the first time, bringing the audience in Shanghai an unforgettable glamourous trip to the Palace of Versaille.

 

Starting with the Fronde rebellion, the young crowned Louis XIV had his power controlled by his mother and Cardinal Mazarin. He fell in love with Marie Mancini of humble birth. After falling seriously ill at war and being presumed dead, only Marie stayed loyal by his side. However, their love was opposed by the court and the Church. Louis was forced to wed a Spanish princess.

 

Following Mazarin’s death, Louis took full power as “Le Roi Soleil”, indulged in pleasure, including romantic affairs with Madame de Montespan, and built Versailles at the people’s cost. After many twists of fate, he married Madame de Maintenon, who was the governess of his illegitimate child, against all objections.
