[Introduction]
A down-to-earth but cool boy in dancing?
He combines KTV, hotpot, dragon dance and contemporary dance on the same stage
You can see a lot of common stuff on this solo stage. Choreographer and dancer ER Gao dances to Tiktok effects, aMEI’s old songs and folk songs. He takes you back to his childhood, including Zurich and his hometown chicken farm.
He talks to the audience, cooks soup, boils hotpot, puts on a dragon dance show and recites poems. He uses a day-to-day, rural yet cutting-edge form to show the nostalgia feelings.
He is a rebellion in contemporary dance, who received all kinds of comments
ER Gao always uses his body as a tool for focusing. He uses different art forms to describe phenomenon such as identity and gender in an absurd and serious style. His works such as “Disco-Teca” is very different from the mainstream style, making him a controversial figure.
His work from a chicken farm goes to international stage, attracting much attention
You can only see your hometown clearly when you are away from it. ER Gao looks back to his hometown in "Kung Hei Fat Choy”, bringing it back to life. The work initiated from a chicken farm debuted on the stage of Rote Fabri in Zurich, Switzerland, and toured in Guangdong, Beijing, Macau and Hong Kong.
Tears with laughs, nostalgia with a funny appearance
The series of "Kung Hei Fat Choy" is an exploration of nostalgia by ER Gao and his team in recent years, working on the issues about fluidity, the parody of Too Cool, the hybridity and techno-culture of rural-urban combination, currently including a theater work "Kung Hei Fat Choy", a dance video "Kung Hei Fat Choy N+", and an independent project "Today's Special".
This time, ER Gao gathers his thoughts in the most intimate and complex “home”, a specific recreated space, in which he tries to accompany families through the live streaming and auspicious flying dragons, and to present a family communication and reconciliation process through overlapping the course of his life with the ones of family members’. This family dialogue is an invitation to true feelings, and also a question to the fading homeland and nostalgia. This time, ER Gao is going to treat us to dinner and let’s have soup, hot pot and watch movie together!
