An orchestra is aiming to move more than just souls with a musical performance about living harmoniously with nature. Played by Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, the show portrays the challenges that earth faces from human history and social development, and how they’re crucial to achieving world peace.
Titled Common Homeland, the performance is happening on September 18 at National Centre for the Performing Arts and brings together Chinese music and musical elements from Africa, Arab, Egypt, India, Ireland, Spain, and the modern Western world. Using Chinese traditional musical instruments in concert with the lute, tabla, tin whistle, Balaban, djembe, and more, the music will whisk the audience away on a journey through civilization and evoke the question of what we want our homeland to be.
The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra is well versed in combining disparate musical elements harmoniously. Founded in 1952, they’re the first big-scale modern Chinese orchestra in and are known for their excellent mastering of all kinds of works. Over the past 50 years, they have grown into a large orchestra complete with all the four parts – strings, plucked instruments, flutes, and percussion instruments – and focused on bringing Chinese folk music to the world.
