【About the Production】

Amadeus is directed by Anatoly Shuliev, the current General Director of the Vakhtangov Theatre. Shuliev studied under Rimas Tuminas, and his works have received numerous prestigious industry awards, including the Golden Mask, Crystal Turandot, MK Award, Theatre Star, and Golden Knight.

In Shuliev's Amadeus, Salieri makes a pact with God, promising the sanctity of his soul and renouncing all worldly desires in exchange for the chance to become a famous composer. He is certain God agrees to the deal. But when the genius Mozart appears, Salieri realizes that God has bestowed this gift upon Mozart – whose middle name "Amadeus" means "beloved of God" – while he himself is merely the only person in the world capable of fully appreciating Mozart's brilliance. Enraged, Salieri declares his pact with God broken and sets out to destroy Mozart as his revenge on the Almighty.

Playing Salieri and Mozart are Aleksei Guskov and Viktor Dobronravov respectively. Both actors have won numerous awards, including the MK Theatre Award for Best Actor, and are widely recognized as top-tier dramatic and film actors in Russia. Their on-stage rivalry has been described by Russian media as a clash of "ice and fire, elegance and roughness, humility and arrogance." Salieri's final monologue has also been hailed by critics as a "theatrical masterpiece."

The production incorporates multiple works by Mozart, his letters, and certain historical facts, blending them seamlessly with the plot and the actors' performances.

【Synopsis】

Salieri, a court composer, has loved music since childhood. After years of effort, he achieves his dream of becoming the most powerful composer in Vienna – until Mozart appears. Mozart is childish, dissolute, and utterly unrefined, yet his musical scores show no corrections, revealing a genius of breathtaking talent. Listening to Mozart's music causes Salieri intense pain – he rages against the injustice of fate, which has bestowed such brilliance upon this frivolous boy.

Salieri pretends to be Mozart's friend while secretly plotting his ruin. Using his influence, he blocks Mozart from obtaining a teaching post, sabotages the rehearsal of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and sows discord between Mozart and the Freemasons and the court. Mozart gradually sinks into poverty, debt, and illness. Finally, Salieri dons a black cloak and knocks on Mozart's door late at night, anonymously commissioning a Requiem and hinting that his death is near, driving him to the brink of mental collapse. In the end, Mozart, sensing his impending death, struggles to complete the Requiem and dies in the arms of his wife, Constanze.

Yet Salieri finds no peace. He lives out his days alone, watching Mozart's music spread across Europe while his own works are forgotten.

Aleksei Guskov (as Antonio Salieri)

People's Artist of the Russian Federation, recipient of the Russian State Prize, and holder of the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honour. Aleksei Guskov is a Russian actor widely known abroad for his film work and international collaborations. International critics often regard him as a symbol of the traditional Russian acting method, which emphasizes deep psychology and emotional truthfulness. In addition to acting, he is a producer of feature films, television films, and animated films. He has performed extensively at the Moscow Art Theatre, the Oleg Tabakov Theatre Studio, the Pushkin Theatre, and the Theatre on Malaya Bronnaya. His film and television credits include The Border: Taiga Incident, The Cleaner, Rage, The Father, The Concert, Confession, Polina, The Ideal, and many others.

At the Vakhtangov Theatre, Guskov has played older Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Shmul-Sender Lazarek (Lord, Smile Upon Us), and Miller (Counterfeit Money), among others. He has noted that the historical Salieri was actually a highly talented and skilled composer who won several musical competitions against Mozart, and therefore Amadeus is not simply a story about jealousy, but an exploration of fate.

Viktor Dobronravov (as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart)

Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation. Viktor Dobronravov is a brilliantly talented actor with great musical sensitivity, embodying the finest traditions of the Vakhtangov acting school and the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute. He excels equally in tragedy, comedy, psychological drama, musicals, and operetta. He graduated from the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute (class of Yevgeny Knyazev) in 2004 and joined the Vakhtangov Theatre the same year. Now one of the company's leading actors, he has performed leading roles under renowned directors such as Vladimir Ivanov, Vladimir Mirzoev, Angelica Kholina, Yuri Butusov, Rimas Tuminas, and Anatoly Shuliev.

His notable roles include: Ulysses in Troilus and Cressida, Iago in Othello, young Onegin in Eugene Onegin, Oedipus in Oedipus Rex, the Earl of Gloucester in King Lear, and Andrei in War and Peace. He made his film debut while still a student in 2001 and has since appeared in over 40 film and television productions.

Ekaterina Kramzina (as Constanze Mozart)

Graduated from the Shchukin Theatre Institute in 2008. She began her stage career at the Moscow Gogol Theatre and was invited to join the Vakhtangov Theatre in 2012. She gained prominence for her role as Kitty in the stage production Anna Karenina and subsequently performed in works such as Women's Coast and Othello. Since 2015, she has played Serafima in The Run, for which she won the MK Theatre Award for Best Actress and the Moscow City Prize for Literature and Art. On the Vakhtangov stage, she has successfully portrayed Constanze, the gentle and virtuous wife in Amadeus, the mysterious muse in Talk to Me, and the tender and devout Marya in War and Peace. Since 2013, she has appeared as a domra-playing wanderer in Eugene Onegin, and since 2022, she has also performed the lead role of Tatyana in the same production.

【Director Biography】

Anatoly Shuliev

Current General Director of the Vakhtangov Theatre.

Born November 22, 1989, in Vladikavkaz, Russia.

From 2008 to 2011, he studied acting at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS). In 2016, he completed the acting and directing course under Nina Dvorzhetskaya and Rimas Tuminas at the Shchukin Theatre Institute.

That same year, his graduation production – Eugène Ionesco's The King Is Dying – was staged at the Vakhtangov Theatre as part of the "Master Class of Director Tuminas" project.

In 2015, Anatoly Shuliev was honoured by the Russian Ministry of Culture with the title "Young Talent of Russia."

Since 2017, he has been a workshop leader in the acting department at GITIS, where he and his students created Who Killed Fyodor Pavlovich?, a work adapted from excerpts of Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov.

In 2017 and 2021, he directed Collected Stories of Stefan Zweig and The Silly Girl at the Vakhtangov Theatre.

In 2023, Shuliev directed Amadeus, his first production on the Vakhtangov main stage.

In April 2023, Shuliev was appointed General Director of the Vakhtangov Theatre.

The Pushkin Novellas, adapted from Pushkin's The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin, premiered in 2024 on the 225th anniversary of Pushkin's birth. It marked Shuliev's first production after becoming General Director.

In 2025, Anatoly Shuliev directed Landau's Sun, about the legendary life of Lev Landau, a brilliant Soviet physicist who made fundamental contributions to many areas of theoretical physics. The production received several of Russia's most influential theatre awards, including the Golden Mask (Russia's highest theatre award), the Crystal Turandot, and the MK Theatre Award.

In June 2026, Shuliev premiered Splendor and Dust, the story of a legendary Russian jewellery dynasty. It has since become a highly anticipated box-office hit at the Vakhtangov Theatre, with tickets selling out months in advance.

He has also directed works by Ibsen, Molière, Dostoevsky, and other classic authors at the Mayakovsky Theatre and the Pushkin Theatre, all achieving strong box-office results. In the film realm, his works Wings, Behind Closed Doors, and The Gift have received awards at several international film festivals.

Theatre critics have said that Shuliev "has found a unique path to the heights of artistic achievement."

【The Vakhtangov Theatre】

The Vakhtangov Theatre is one of the most celebrated theatres in Russia and the world. Founded in 1921, it is located in the heart of Moscow on the historic Arbat Street. The theatre's founder, Yevgeny Vakhtangov, was a distinguished student of Konstantin Stanislavsky, the pioneer of the renowned acting system. As a trailblazer in theatre, Vakhtangov's artistic concepts profoundly influenced the theatre history of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Today, the Vakhtangov Theatre's core philosophy is the harmonious fusion of perfect form and profound psychological depth. Combining deep historical traditions with a keen sensitivity to contemporary art, the theatre's repertoire spans classical tragedy to modern comedy, encompassing drama, operetta, dance, and other forms, with over 100 performances monthly in Moscow.

In 2007, the internationally acclaimed theatre master Rimas Tuminas was invited to serve as the Vakhtangov Theatre's Artistic Director. Under his leadership, the theatre further solidified its status as one of Russia's premier dramatic companies.

In 2024, Rimas Tuminas and the Vakhtangov Theatre brought their production of War and Peace to China for the first time, premiering at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center to great audience acclaim. In 2025, the Vakhtangov Theatre returned with the highly acclaimed Eugene Onegin and the landmark classic Uncle Vanya, once again sparking a theatre-going frenzy in Shanghai.
